Question about contracts and cuts

Do Will Smith (and the other guys) still get some of the contract money for this coming year, even though they've been cut?
If not, what the hell is the incentive for these older guys to put so much compensation on the back-end when they will be cut anyway? It makes zero sense to me?

They get whatever money is guaranteed in the contract. I think the belief is that they renegotiate their contract to spread out the cap hit but they receive more guaranteed money. I think it is sort of a win/win if structured correctly.

yes and it I believe what they get will count against the cap. That's why when you here the term guaranteed it matters more in the NFL. They are getting the guaranteed money regardless and that money is usually frontloaded or back loaded depending on the situation with the player

Thanks guys - that make some sense, but also seems like most contracts are meaningless then.

Meaningless in what way? Guarantee money is just the most important number. Players still make more than their guaranteed money each year with roster/workout bonuses.

Yep. Thats pretty important to most guys, especially older players.

as previously mentioned. it's all about guaranteed money. they are given a lump sum of guaranteed money today... in doing so, their yearly salary is reduced and stretched out.
