Looking to see if anyone owns one. I'm In the market for a used bay boat and was really wanting a yahmaha but have seen a couple nice boats with etecs on the back.

When we were looking we came across a few, older models. They had a bad rap, can't remember the years exactly. Maybe early 2000 or later.

Friend had one. Stay away. More problems with that motor than we could keep up with.

I know some of the original etecs had lower unit issues

I've researched them on the hull truth and they have a pretty big following over there with lots of good things to say, also a few horror stories. I guess that can happen with any motor though

If it's your money I'd say go ahead and buy with confidence. I hear they had problems in the early models but have since worked it the kinks and are good motors.

If it's my money. I'm sticking with Yamaha.

Yea it's my money that's why I'm wanting Yamaha. I would want to kill myself if I spent $40k on a thug pos

For me it would have to be a really exceptional deal to get something with an E-Tec on it. Especially if you are going to be spending in the 40k ballpark. Get what you want.

I'm the same way. I'm sure there are some really happy ETEC owners out there. I've had a 2002 VMAX since 2002 though and had absolutely zero problems with it, and only one guy I know personally has had an issue with a yammy and it was something very mild. I have a 25 tiller too that I've beat to shite and had zero problems with as well. Like I said - probably many happy ETC owners out there - but I know one personally who hated his with very good reason, and I've heard enough stories couple with lack of issue with Yamaha to keep me buying.

We ran mostly post '08 models at my previous job, hard working machines. I found them easier to work on than Yamahas. Not saying they needed work more than the yamahas, just having a chance to work on both the Evinrudes were much easier.

LOVE THE TORQUE... we were out running for USGS doing satellite topography work and we were pushing past boats with yamahas both of us running flat out.

Here's some youtube vids...
Evinrude vs Yamaha: Hole Shot
Evinrude sinks Yamaha
These might seem like Evinrude-homer vids, but they seem relatively legit, that's only reason I posted them.

After my time, I've grown into a Evinrude/Johnson guy. But by no means, am I trashing Yamahas, cause I would pick one up in heartbeat.

Just saying if I had a choice of either a '12 Yamaha or a '12 Evinrude.

I'd go Evinrude, simply because more torque, less working parts, two-stroke with damn near 4-stroke fuel efficiency.

Plus a big one.... Privately owned company, no shareholder, and MADE IN THE USA

On my boat now I have a 1994 150 Evinrude, runs like a scalded dog and havent had any major issues. Etec is another ball game though

My ultimate set up is a 250 Yammy four stroke on 22ft bay boat. I could settle for a hpdi if the deal was right

Sounds like your mind is already made up....

...even though your better judgment is telling you not to.

Don't be like me and be an impulsive buyer. Don't get in a hurry. You'll be happier with what you truly want, even if you have to wait.

I've been extremely patient/picky to the point were the wife is starting to make fun of me. In November I was about 2 hours from buying a shearwater and the guy got cold feet at the last minute and decided to keep the boat.

Be picky. That's a big commitment and you rely on it to get you back to the dock safely. She can make fun but tell her that you are the one she would bitch at if it turned out to be a POS that sucks money...I mean, more than the average boat.

They've gotten their asses kicked in terms of market share in South LA. Don't see many on the boats of locals.

I have a 2012 115 on the back of a 17ft CC. It runs 50 no problem and burns hardly any oil or gas. Buy the oil in bulk to save money.

I had an 09 etec 225

I now have a 2013 etec 175 and twin 2013 etec 225's

I love them. My engines leading up to the etecs were 2 yamaha sw series 200's and i still own a yamaha 115 four stroke. The four stroke is an 04 and been to hell and back but I love my etecs. Very fuel efficient, good hole shot and good top end. The cirst few hours on them new is hell on oil but thats part od the break in period.
