He's originally from the midwest. Is Birmingham worth a shite to live in? It's in Alabama so I assume not and told him so, but I have never been.

Just like any city, parts of it are real nice and other parts not so much.

It is ok. A very very average midsize city. Nothing special, nothing that bad. If he is from the Midwest it is probably about what he would expect from a midsize city.

That's what I'm worried about for this guy. He's a pretty sophisticated, smart guy. I'd hate to think of him drowning in a sea of redneck shite. No offense to anybody from down there who is not a redneck.

I like it. Pretty much get 4 seasons, it's got some nice terrain to it, relatively clean. I could live there.

Isn't the leadership supposed to be as bad as Baton Rouge's?

If he can get a place in Vestavia or Mountain Brook it's nice. Other than that, I'd advise him to consider other options.

I lived in B'ham area for about 6 years. Very nice area once you get past all the Roll Tide and War Eagle bullshite. I actually lived in Alabaster which was about 17 miles south of downtown B'ham and only 10 minute drive from Hoover.

I will admit it was different than BR. Around here it is no big deal to drink a beer at a neighbors house. While in B'ham, I had to watch who I offered a beer to. Some would get offended.

This statement could be made for any mid to large sized city in the South. The south side of a Birmingham is nice.

It's a nice enough city with a good food, drink, and music scene

I grew up in the Ham. It is an ok place to live. Average midsize city. Good parts, bad parts. Nothing stands out as great but there is plenty of ok and pretty good in the city imo as long as he is not looking for an exciting or faster pace type of city.

Only if he lives in the downtown core, which is unlikely.

Alabaster/Helena, Vestavia, and parts of homewood are awesome places to live. I'd say bham gets a lot of shite for some reason, totally underrated city.

You've obviously never been to downtown birmingham. Plenty of different bars, multiple breweries with good beer, and different restaurants.

Southside is pretty liberal as well, as shown by the daily show.

Mountain Brook, Vestavia Hills, Pelham, Hoover, Trussville are all nice. I worked out of Trussville for 2 1/2 years. I always stayed at Candlewood Suites in Mountain Brook. If my wife would have been willing to move there four years ago, I would be a Birmingham resident right now.....or at least a Hoover resident.

Birmingham is great. Not Austin or Boulder type great, but there is lots to do.

How old is he? Highland Park and Avondale are the place to be if you're under 35 and single.
