Would a superhero show work on HBO?
Posted by BlacknGold on 2/11/14 at 3:11 pm00
This kind of sparked out of thinking about Misfits being remade in America. Will a premium network that can show gore and nudity and has larger budgets ever go into the "comic book" world?
i know HBO did Spawn but that was 20 years ago and animated. If anyone is familiar with the comic "The Boys," I would love to see a serialized adaptation and HBO would be perfect for it.

If they picked up heros at the the end of season 2, killed sylar, put in a new villain and began the show there it would absolutely work. You can just have hero go back in the first episode to seemelessly erase the stupid arse other seasons of that show. I havenever in my llife been more disappointed by any form of entertainment as I was by that show.
HBO would work perfectly because they can curse and show gore and obviously are not afraid to kill off main characters.

If True Blood can last 7 seasons, I'm sure they can manage to make a superhero show work.

It is not a bad idea. What I see working is a Golden Age style story - perhaps not in a vibrant world filled with heroes, but maybe a guy who is just fed up - no real super powers - but fancies himself a hero.
Then actually becomes one over time - survives his early mistakes to get better and better, particularly as law enforcement starts to trust him.
Again, I like Golden Age setting here, perhaps a period piece set during the Great Depression, might work.

Yeah, I think if it was a more adult themed version, it would work well.
With the exception of a few, superhero shows on non-subscription based networks are just too cheesy and don't have the proper funding IMO to make it work.
HBO I think could make it work.

Somewhere along season 4 or 5 (i don't remember), my wife and I would just look at each other and be like..."WTF?"

i think almost everyone is right there with you. never seen a faster train wreck honestly. the only other show that even comes close is Dexter.
The Golden Age idea could work. it sounds more like an older version of "Kick-arse." I liked the idea of "The Boys,' as it is set in todays world and basically makes an extremely depraved mockery of the entire superhero genre while telling a really good story.
I would like to see something like that which isnt as traditional as most "hero," type shows. It would need to be more like GoT in tone where there isnt really one "set" bad guy or hero. Characters kind of border each.

"The Boys,"
When I read the title of the thread, this is the first comic that came to mind.
A HBO series based on DC's Kingdom Come would be cool, though I doubt DC/Warner Bros. would give up the right on that.
How about a Punisher series based on Garth Ennis' run?
The Authority would be a good one too.

Misfits would be pretty awesome as an hbo show with a solid budget. The boys would be frigging amazing as an hbo series if done right. The boys would be right up hbo's alley with the dark humor and violence

Powers.
They've been trying to bring it to FX but I don't think that's ever going to work.

Something along the lines of Will Eisner's The Spirit would fit well with this theme.

Good one. Another one I'd like to see would be Rising Stars.

Doesn't Time own HBO and DC?
I could see a sandman show being a huge hit, but might be too expensive to do with all the CGI.
Swamp thing might be cool too.
I personally believe that a batman series could be incredible. I doubt it will ever happen, but since he is a detective the material is there for longer, season long arcs. I doubt you could reconcile it with a cinematic universe though.

shite, youre right. i forgot about that.
wow, HBO could totally tap into that vein and grab some grab stories. I would shy away from the mainstream stuff as thats better for movies and the CW.
id go more for the vertigo or wildstorm type things. Authority would be cool. id also like to see a more twisted version of the x-men.

Alan Moore's Top Ten would work well there.

Vertigo is awesome but the core set of DC comics just isnt that good. The only series that consistently delivers is batman. Swamp thing is good but its inconsistent. WW is over-rated. Flash just isn't interesting. JLA, meh.
I think that american vampire could be a great mini series/tv show. the characters are pretty compelling. Fables could be a great long running series, although it might be too expensive to do with all the creatures.
I haven't read much of the wildstorm stuff.
