I listened to the free preview on NPR last week. I find the album hit and miss. It's very unusual at times. Some songs are good. When it gets weird, it gets really weird.

I've looked forward to this for a while and was extremely disappointed. I am a big Eric Church fan and he missed big time IMO.

I felt very meh the first listen but after the 2nd or third I find it's growing on me big time. You have to take it for what it is. Don't define it as country cuz it ain't. It ain't trashville either. It's def different than you've heard lately. But I hear a lot if old rock vibes, outlaw country vibes, mixed in with new age vibes, classic country vibes. I'm likeing it more and more.

I am a few songs into it so far. I liked talladega and a man who was going to die at thirty. The Outsiders the joint . I don't know how I feel about rollercoster ride yet. I am a huge eric church fan but he is slowly starting to sell out but eventually Nashville always wins.

ETA: Dark side
like a wrecking ball is pretty good too
I like give me back my hometown
I thought Thats damn rock and roll was a little ironic.
Cold one - meh
Devil,Devil - freak yeah

Overall I give the album a B- or a C+. It would be a solid B in my book but the outsiders and the joint are just damn bad. EC can still rock and I'm sure his shows are still awesome but he is slowing selling out

ETAA: after relistening to it I would give it a solid B. The only bad song on the cd I think is the outsiders.

i can see how some people could be turned off by some of his stuff, but you know he always wants to do his own thing

Bought it last night on iTunes, but I've only had a chance to listen to a few of them on the ride in this morning. Pretty good so far. I'm a big fan of his, and knew this would be a little different than the past albums, but it is different in a good way.

BTW, there was a decent Grantland article on it.

I've been a huge fan of Eric Church since Sinners Like Me. Seen him multiple times live and he is bad arse. The new album is different but was so was Chief compared to his previous albums. Church is legit.

I gave it another listen yesterday and may have been too critical. It's not Carolina but it will probably be fun to listen to live. I am a big fan of him when he performs his acoustic shows and this album will probably shine in that setting.
A Man Who's Gonna Die Young Acoustic
Dark Side Acoustic

Side note: Here are a few unreleased songs that I have found over the years and figured I would share.

He's a clown. Can't take him or his music seriously. Complete garbage. Hope he suffers a vocal cord injury that reduces him back to the scaffold builder he should have been. Or roofer. One of the two.

I like it, but find it to be pretty dark and dreary for the most part. Def not for everyone. Love Like a Wrecking Ball, my track on the album. Devil Devil...wtf is that all about. Less talk, more sing!

From the documentary last night, he said he was reading a lot of poetry and listening to spoken word when he created this album. That was the main reason for the darker tone to this album plus that spoken word part in Devil, Devil.

He also didn't want to make another drink a lot of beer and party album like most mainstream country songs. He said he is 36 and wanted the album to reflect where he is in life and be relevant to him.

Having only seen the documentary and not listened to any song all the way through, I respect him for not setting out to make the same garbage that is being churned out hourly on country radio.

Yeah, because he doesn't have a business degree from App State.

You're right. I should have added hotel clerk to my list of possible occupations for Mr. Church.
