OT cops or DMV workers...do these old folks not have a requirement of a yearly driving exam? Honestly curious on the rules for the elderly driving cars.

Doreen Landstra was backing out of a space in the parking lot of a 55-and-older mobile home community in East Bradenton when she lost control of her SUV, striking the pedestrians and crashing over a curb before coming to rest partially submerged in a creek.
Landstra, a former choir director in the Bradenton community, according to CNN affiliate Bay News 9, was leaving church when, according to witnesses, she appeared to think she put her Chevrolet SUV in drive but instead shifted into reverse.

Apparantly there are no rules.
We have lots of incidents of old people doing stupid shite like this around here.
Last year at a small pharmacy an old lady put the car in drive instead of reverse. She hopped the parking block and pinned a man against the building.
Instead of letting off the gas though, she panicked and kept her foot all the way down. Tires were spinning and smoking for a good 15 seconds accordign to witnesses.
He died.

The point of the thread is not the story itself, it's around the laws for the elderly driving.

Ever see the Southpark on this subject? Scarily accurate. The AARP will never allow more regulation.
My father is about to be 72. He doesn't stop at stop signs anymore. He pauses at redlights and goes when he can. If you see a black Hyundai with a Jesus Fish on the front, get the hell out of the way.

yeah, I'm way more worried about my 80+ year old grandmaw driving than a 16 year old on his/her iPhone. At least the kid had to take a driving test within the last 65 years.

What's the minimum speed that you might kill someone? I'm thinking it would probably be somewhere in the 20-25 range, unless it's a young child. (OT experts feel free to prove me wrong). How do you get up to those speeds in a parking lot?

You should see all these old arse Canadians and Mainers driving huge RV's down here and not knowing where they're going all winter. It's scary as shite.

AARP is scientology for old old people.
The day I turned 50, I had an AARP brochure in my mailbox. I haven't joined yet.

My grandfather went from an incredible driver at age 80, to a terrifying driver at age 81. Just like throwing s lightswitch.
I propose mandatory driving, not paper, driver tests every three years. 50$ gets you a test and a license. If you fail, you try again the following day for an additional 50$. Basically set up a timed easy Autocross course. If you can't do it in time, or hit a cone, you fail.
The tax dollars would easily pay for it.
I feel bad for the people and families who she hurt...don't feel bad for her. No different than drinking and driving. Know your limits and hand the keys off.

You could be going much slower than that and kill someone. It's not so much the initial impact, but getting pinned or drug can easily kill someone at low speeds.

Gawd damn, who the frick puts it to the floor when coming out a parking spot? Even if she thought it was in drive, can we ease onto the gas pedal there grandma?

This lady likely got her driver's license at 15 years old. If she renewed it on time, that would mean she hasn't taken a driving exam in at least 63 years, maybe 64 depending on her birthday.
Anyone want to predict how many driving laws have changed in the last 63 years?
