I think it's the opposite actually and is going over your head.
There is no need for the console if you can just use other cheaper/built in options. The market is far too crowded for M$ to do shite in, just like their phones/Bing/Tablets that are all failing miserably.
Go buy a $500 game console, a $400+ Surface, just to stream TV and do what Chromecast does for $35, among a ton of other similar products. Do you really think all of these people that want to watch TV/stream it also want to buy a $500 gaming console?

I know being ignorant isn't a choice you make as much as it is a disability you seem to have been born with but so I will cut you some slack but you act as if that's the only sole purpose of those devices.
It's an added benefit that allows you to get more out of the $400 surface and the $500 Xbone. The more features you get out of a device then the more the price point becomes easier to stomach.
MS allowing you to control your whole life through their software on all devices, which includes the Xbone, is pretty damn cool and that is where they are heading. This is just the first step into that.
Sony isn't even their competition in this regard because Sony isn't a software company as proven by their past failures with horrible UIs and quite frankly Sony doesn't have the money to build the infrastructure (state of the are servers/cloud) that MS has already built and is continuing to improve.
Gooogle is who MS is trying to beat to be your go to for everything. It's why Bill Gates himself said yesterday that cloud service is their biggest focus right now for interconnectivity and what all that will offer in a stream lined world that all of your devices will connect to.
Amazon is also a slight threat to MS for this as well IMO. As they increase their servers/cloud to businesses like they have the past few years it only makes sense that at some point they will focus this more on the individual consumer as well. Don't doubt for a second that Amazon isn't working on more hardware than just the Kindle.

Amazon has been working on a game console and some think it will be a threat. I saw a rumor that they already have some of their own developers

Doesn't surprise me.
The 3 biggest tech/consumer companies in the world (Amazon, MS, and Google) all equally know how important it is to offer a full service tech solution to people going forward.
People that say MS should drop Bing, Windows phones, and the Surface tablets forget that even though they lose money on those things right now it is a necessity to get to where they want to be and that is you using Windows for your whole life. I'm not saying it will happen because Windows 8 set them back some initially and they have an uphill battle against Android but that is what their intentions are. It's why Windows 8 is mobile ready so you're used to the interface across all your hardware and so that it's easier to adapt programs across all platforms as well.
The 3 biggest tech/consumer companies in the world (Amazon, MS, and Google) all equally know how important it is to offer a full service tech solution to people going forward.

You say that...guess you don't know how things work. Where do you think this streaming service will come from? Fantasy land?
The cost will just be put into your internet charges. Providers will get their money and if you think wireless is the answer, that's even more laughable cause where do you think they get their service from?
You won't pay cable/satelite but you will be paying a ISP who will want more money being their cable division has hit the tank and they are looking for revenue.
A la carte may happen, but it will change the way you pay for internet and when that happens people may be wishing for the days of cable to return. You can basically look at how people are paying for internet with their wireless company and that's what the future will look like for your ISP. Also look for your wireless charges for internet to just keep rising.

I don't know about all of those things but windows phones have grown. They are still a small market share but it has gotten bigger and people that have them say it is great, it just needs more apps. Apps will come with time. If I was in the market for a new phone i would look at them as an option.
In terms of a console i am interested to see what amazon does. I have heard they would use an android OS which may hurt because some developers, including john carmack, have said that their os is not good for gaming. All of this is speculation at this point but interested to watch none the less. I think a lot of us see gaming being a streaming service sometime in the future anyway.

As long as you love college sports, cutting the cord will be hard. If they go to a subscribe to what you want to model, I am sure prices will remain the same. I could see the ESPN/Fox Sports family costing $50+ alone, since that is the bread and butter of cable. Internet access will always be a min of $20 for the entry level speeds and add taxes/franchise fee/etc. A few more misc channels you like and boom you are back to $100.
College Sports are not going to stream legally on the Internet for free. ESPN is not going to offer their content for $9.99 a month either, because they know we will pay more.
