Picked up on from Cabelas in the used area.

Any ammo to stay away from. What shoots good in it. I'll try a few different types and weights to dial it in.

Depends on what you're using it for. If you're hunting w/ it, you'll need to stay away from FMJ bullets. A number of folks here don't like the Hornady ammmo but I don't have any personal experience w/ it. In general, it's hard to go wrong w/ factory 308 Win ammo as long as you're using the appropriate bullet weight.

Your gun, and only your gun, can tell you that. What's accurate in my gun may be horrible in your gun.

If it's for deer hunting, use 150 grain spire point bullets; buy a box of of the more commonly available ammo in your area. Sight it in and shoot a few 3 shot groups at 100 yds. If you're happy w/ the results, you're good to go. If it's not accurate enough, go buy another box of commonly available ammo and try it out. Repeat until you're pleased. Once you're happy buy a few extra boxes so you're ready for the next ammo shortage.

Thanks. Basically deer hunting with it.

Maybe a dumb question but can I shoot 7.62x 51 in it? Looks to be cheaper for range practice. Course the impact point maybe different than a round used for deer.

Yes. If you have a 308 Winchester chamber, 7.62x51 is safe to shoot.

It's actually the opposite of the 5.56/.223 thing.

5.56 <- 223 ok
.223 <- 5.56 not ok

and

.308 <- 7.62 ok
7.62 <- 308 not ok

Bapple you confusing me here brother. You say you can run 7.62x51 in a 308win chamfered rifle. Then you say

quote:

.308->7.62 ok
7.62->308 not ok

Please explain.

I think he is saying a 308 chambered rifle can shoot 7.62. But a 7.62 rifle can't shoot 308. Because of pressures.

Yea I was saying a 308 chamber can take the lower pressure 7.62. I'll reverse those arrows to avoid confusion...

I shoot Federal Power shock 150 grain SP (blue box). Havent had a deer go more than 20 yards after being hit.

Gun has a sweet feeling trigger. Gonna mount a scope on tomorrow. Hopefully put some rounds down range Wednesday.

Where do you have it sighted at?

I need to find some charts.

Are y'all saying one can't shoot 308 Win ammo in a rifle chambered for 7.62X51?

That's not entirely correct. People will cite the Go/No Go gauge spec differences and case dimensions as why .308 commercial loads are not safe in mil surp 7.62 rifles. The real reason is more akin to why you shouldn't run most commercial .30-06 ammo in a milsurp M1 Garand. It's not the chamber, brass, or pressure as much as the burn rate which affect gas operated semi-autos.

Ok. I'll stick with 308win only.

Thanks.

I can't think of anything off the top of my head that doesn't work well in the old man's. His loves cheap federal blue box 150gr, but they're tough to find.
