Why should he be suspended for defending his dignity? The fat oaf of a man should be barred from going to TT games.

Damn, I was hoping he would come out telling us what the guy said and then refuse to apologize.

Because players need to be held to a higher standard. You can probably find an incident at every game (college or pro) where a player "should defend his dignity." Many fans are stupid as f*ck and try to instigate altercations with players. And these fans are often inebriated.
Smart's punishment is separate from whether the fan should also be reprimanded. If it is found that he shouted verbal insults and racial slurs at him, then he should be barred from future games.
