How many spaces do you leave after a period before beginning the next sentence?

I was taught to leave two spaces after a period and a colon. I've done this for 30+ years.

Two spaces like God intended. Using one space is yet another example of the breakdown in society and a discarding of the things which made America great. Sorta like cursive not being taught anymore in many schools.

I believe I was taught two while in school, but I find that people use two spaces way too inconsistently. Use one or use two, but be consistent.

I was also taught to use 2 spaces after a period but my iPhone uses 1 when you double tap to put a period. I'm not sure but when I type up something, I always use 2 spaces.

2 is correct, but they are teaching 1 space now. 1 space is the new normal.
