First off I have zero knowledge when it comes to fixing or diagnosing automobile problems. I have a 2006 dodge ram pick up and the past few days there has been this loud almost scraping kind of noise coming from what sounds to be underneath my truck. It also squeaks a bit during this sometimes. I looked around underneath and didn't really find anything (although I don't have any idea what I was looking for ) It doesn't do it constantly but it does occur very often when driving. I'm just a poor college grad student and trying to avoid having to pay big bucks to get it checked out if possible. Anyone have an idea of what the problem could be? Thanks

You didn't look underneath good enough, you have been dragging a homeless guy for three days.

it has started sometimes when turning but also occurs when just driving straight down the road. doesn't really seem like it's being triggered by a certain action from what I can tell.

Does it sound like scraping metal? Check the brakes. Sometimes they do this, even when you aren't pushing on the brake pedal. Just happened to me on my car... replaced the brakes and fixed it. Sometimes the brakes are fine, and just need some grease.

that's exactly what it sounds like. first time I heard it I pulled over and looked underneath because I thought something fell and was dragging on the road.

Any vibration accompanying the noise? Have you rolled down the windows to see if you can hear where it's coming from (front, rear, left, right)? 2wd or 4wd? Auto or standard?

Does it shake or anything?

Is the noise coming from the front or just past your feet?

Driver or passenger side or both?

Good opportunity for a first post.

I have an 06 ram and have taken care of quite a few things myself. When at speed, does the noise change when you turn / swerve the truck one way or the other? If so its a front wheel bearing. Jack up the front and spin the wheels by hand. See which one doesn't turn smoothly and go from there. Pretty easy to change yourself.

Like the poster above said, check brakes first. You can inspect the pads easily enough. If they look good, jack up the truck one wheel at a time and spin the wheels as fast as you can (truck in neutral for rear) could be a wheel bearing going out or gone. It's almost got to be a driveline issue if it only makes noise when moving.

Sounds like the bearings on the front wheel/wheels. This happened to my Tahoe. Hard to change em out without pneumatic tools.

Edit
Sorry, didn't see Matt02's post. But pretty sure that's what it is.

Could be brakes, wheel bearing, steering, or transmission.

Would not be able to tell you more without hearing myself.

Brakes- less than $200, wheel bearing $400, steering $800, transmission $2000
They will quote you more, but you can negotiate or call around.

thanks for all the advice guys. i don't know if any of y'all can answer this without knowing exactly what the issue is but i won't have time to get it looked at til sometime next week. Is it ok to drive it for next few days without causing further more severe damage? i also have a buddy that does mechanic work and could hook me up for cheap but lives about an hour and a half away and I'd have to drive it there.

If there is any vibration at all it could be the dreaded u-joints, if that's the case good luck

Driving it could make it worse. Usually there will be some sort of change in the driving characteristics before total failure. I wouldn't ride around with the radio loud so you can pay attention to your truck. If it shakes or gets a lot worse rapidly, pull over.

You can also try joining a Dodge Ram forum. They probably have diy tutorials and would be happy to help you figure it out.
