I.T. question regarding the default boot order in BIOS/UEFI

Why do manufacturers put external USB device higher on the list than SATA?
Don't get me wrong, we've made money on service orders because people plug in drives, then their computer won't boot, so it doesn't make me mad.
But I do wonder, why would that be the default? It makes no sense, and it seems to be a very common default across many mobo/bios/uefi manufacturers.

recovery flash drive or something? it's always confused me too, but I've never had an issue with it

No, a customer will plug in an external HDD via USB for backup. When the computer reboots, it tries to boot from the USB drive before the internal SATA. Makes no sense to me.

I like it that way, so that if I ever need to boot from a flash drive I just plug it in and reboot. No need to fiddle with the BIOS to make it boot from USB. Either that or show a boot menu. But I think if the USB drive isn't bootable it should just try the next device, or at least ask you.

For recovery. If the internal drive is corrupt for some reason the external needs to supercede it. Same reason floppy drive always came before hard drives in older computers.

Those are just starting to become the norm. This has been happening since XP at the earliest.

I have no idea. It makes 0 sense. Are that many people now booting from USB?
I have an external HDD so I had to change the boot order too. After reading the thread I guess it makes a little more sense, if someone wants to boot from USB it makes it a little faster.

guessing because the market is moving away from optical drives

Many computers don't even come with DVD drives anymore. A USB with a bootable disc image on it is much easier and faster than a disc anyway.
