Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes holds a slim 4-point advantage over U.S. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell in a new Herald-Leader/WKYT Bluegrass Poll, with many voters saying they disapprove of McConnell but don't yet know Grimes nine months from Election Day.

While Grimes leads the poll 46 percent to 42 percent, which is within the poll's margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points, data reveals that her relatively strong starting position is more about voters disapproval of McConnell than solid support for Grimes.

"This new poll confirms that Kentucky's U.S. Senate seat is up for grabs, and that the contest here will be one of the most exciting in the country," said Stephen Voss, a political science professor at the University of Kentucky. "The voters are evenly divided right now, and so many of them are still making up their minds that the contest could swing in any direction."

Nice momentum ya got there, Republicans. Would be a shame if you missed retaking the Senate because your Senate Leader couldn't win reelection.

Even though I'd like to see Mitch go, hatred for Obama will probably give him another term....

At least you are being honest and not saying this is "momentum" for democrats. His low ratings are due to the primaries. FWIW, Larry Sabato said this is ridiculous and should not be taken seriously. Obama has a 35% approval rating there.

In an especially troubling sign for McConnell, his job-approval rating was two points below the approval rating poll respondents gave President Barack Obama, who remains deeply unpopular in the state. Only 32 percent approved of McConnell, compared to 34 percent for Obama. Both men won a disapprove rating from 60 percent of those surveyed.

You better hope your party mobilizes teh minorities, because you guys wouldn't win shite without them. And, history shows time and time again, teh minorities don't show up for midterm elections.

Good. McConnell is a waste of skin.

Um, you really think the D's have an advantage? Might want to look at all the other seats.

I'd be surprised to see Begich win, even with his name recognition throughout the state.

McConnell must be in one hell of a tailspin. Amazing how much things have changed in one week.

New poll shows mixed news for Mitch McConnell and Alison Lundergan Grimes
McConnell leads 45 percent to 44 percent

January 29, 2014

A new poll from a liberal-leaning group shows Kentucky’s U.S. Senate race remains deadlocked, but the news isn’t all bad for Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

A survey conducted by Public Policy Polling group for the liberal group Americans United for Change found little change in a head-to-head match-up between McConnell and likely Democratic nominee Alison Lundergan Grimes, with McConnell leading 45 percent to 44 percent.

The same company polled Kentucky in late December and found McConnell leading Grimes 43 percent to 42 percent. The margin of error in the most recent poll was plus or minus 3.3 percentage points.

Of 882 Kentuckians polled from Jan. 24-26, 52 percent said they were Democrats, 36 percent said they were Republicans and 12 percent identified themselves as independents or other.

Mitch is getting primaried also by a more conservative tea party type (can't remember his name) so if Mitch's support is waning this bad, then he may lose that primary and the new GOP contender in the race would likely win the Senate seat over Grimes.

Don't care, would be worth it to see another worthless politician out of a job.

Too many people worried about the "team" and not worried enough about all the shitbags we allow to just sit and rot in their seats term after term after term after term.

Unfortunately, that strategy has failed more than it has succeeded. In Indiana, it failed MISERABLY.

This is in Kentucky, a solid conservative state. Conservatives hate Mitch, and they sure don't want a Democrat.

Like the article said, the polling for Grimes is due to a lack of support for Mitch, not support for her. Put a new GOP candidate in there and they likely excite the base enough to cruise to victory

I don't pretend replacing the chess pieces affects the game in the least.

That said, McConnell represents the problem of entrenched incumbency.

frick that, frick him.

I don't give a sick rat's arse about the score of the "game". I'll be glad to see Mitch go and let the hacks celebrate / decry it

That's because Mourdock is a baffoon.

The Tea Party needs to vet its candidates more carefully so you get a Tim Scott/Rand Paul type instead of an Akin/Mourdock. Either that, or any male candidate who wants a Tea Party endorsement should agree to have electrodes attached to his balls that will give him a shock if he says the words "rape" or "abortion".
