I'm looking to purchase one soon.

For those of you that would know more about this than I do, what should I be looking for as far as brand names? Give me some recommendations and some links if you can.

I have a Bose 301 speaker system and receiver that I will want to plug it into so we can hear it throughout the house.

I also have that Crosley pictured above. Got it as a gift and doubted it would sound good enough being all-in-one. I have been very pleased with it for 3-4 years now.

But it cannot be plugged into external speakers. You can plug in an Aux cord and play an iPod through it though. At the cheap price, it's a good deal and something easy to bring outside to listen to records on da porch.

I picked one up at Salvation Army for $50. Still had the original receipt from when it was purchased in 1970 ($300 then). It's in a big console that takes up a lot of space. I don't know if I could ever hook it up to an external speaker system, but I like the sound. Reminds me of when I was a kid listening to my grandfather's.

Don't buy anything you can't plug into a receiver or external speakers.

What would you recommend up to $250?

Up to $500?

I have an old 1960's Dual turntable which is beautiful. However, the motor broke and finding replacement parts for a reasonable fee proved impossible. So I bought a Sony turntable component. It's nothing special, but it works with my receiver and amp.

The ability to hook up to external speakers is a must. I don't really have a budget per se, but i'm looking for the best value overall I guess.

If you're not looking to spend over a grand on a turntable, I recommend the Audio-Technica turntable I purchased a few years back. I still love it. LINK
However, I recommend that you replace the cartridge. I installed an Shure M97xE phono cartridge and the sound quality was significantly better. LINK

Should sound divine with those bose speakers.

I have one of these on order.

U-Turn Audio

The reviews are stellar. Very simple machine that is all manual. You are paying for a good motor, heavy plinth and platter, proprietary tone arm and good cartridge options. Shipped is right at $200 and there are some simple upgrade options.

It was a kickstarter product and they have had a few delays in production as they are small and brand new. Hand assembled and tested in boston. Most of the components are sourced from the US.

"With the Orbit Basic turntable, U-Turn Audio has succeeded beyond my wildest dreams; their very first attempt is a knockout!"
Steve Guttenberg, CNET

"A 179 dollar miracle... it offers those unfamiliar with analog playback an inexpensive and uncomplicated way to find out what the fuss is all about."
Jerold O'Brian, TONEAudio

"...if you haven't made the plunge and bought a record player, it's about time you thought about picking up the Orbit Turntable."

Looks pretty awesome. I would really recommend a dust cover.

Get a Crosley, but not the suitcase one that these guys bought at Urban Outfitters.

Get an old heavy turntable from the 70's. That era had the best stuff when it comes to quality.

I was in the market for one of those, but after reading reviews and not knowing a whole lot about refurbing them, I opted for the u-turn. By the time got a decently rated one that was refurbished or rolled the dice on one that wasn't, I was in ~$200. I went check them out at the Atomic Pop Shop as well and found the same thing.

That was really the direction I wanted to go as I'm hooking it up to a vintage Marantz receiver. I'm looking forward to this new unit though.
