I've always heard the term "5 star" restaurant thrown around but I can't find anything in basic searches indicating consensus on how these classifications work.

Can someone help me get started? I'd like to try to get a comprehensive list of all of the 5 star restaurants in Nola just to see how many or few I have actually been to. I understand that tom fitzmorris' site is a good place to start but I was wondering if anybody has any other places I could look.

August would be 5 star IMO. Not sure about others. Probably a ton of 4 star.

Not sure how many other "official" sites actually do star rankings. I'm thinking it is just a term alot of people like to use.

The Times Picayune's food writer uses beans. The gambit doesn't rate, they just give simple reviews.

I don't really trust shite like Zagot.

Seems like Restaurant August and Stella might be the only two that most people would agree on as five stars.

Good starts. I'd say certain periods in Commander's life they have been, especially when Jamie Shannon was the chef. Peristyle with Anne Kearney and I would say Gautreau's is now as well.

Had a personal meal from him. He was the god father of a girl I dated in high school, whose Dad worked with Jaime a long time. She called him "uncle Jamie". This is before I had ever been to Commander's. I finally went there for her prom, for my prom we went to her Dad's restaurant which was Palace Cafe, now he's running Muriel's.

There's an Italian place around the quarter, can't remember the name though, that the wife and I ate at, that had "5stars". It was god awful. I don't know what it takes to get those stars in NOLA but it can't be much. I think they give themselves the stars.

Tony Moran's. We ordered our food and 5-10 minutes later it was out and on the table. I was excited they were so fast. I then thought "too damn fast?" The food was made prior, sometime earlier that day, and it was cold and nasty. Disgusting to be totally honest.

What in the hell made you decide to eat there?
That is the perfect example of a tourist trap to the clueless diner.

If you are looking for the top restaurants in New Orleans, I think Brett Anderson's Top 10 is a good place to start. That and the ensuing debate will give you a good idea of places to go, in no particular order. And haven't been eating out as much as I used to, but this represents some combo of food/service/experience. And not just places that blow smoke.

Gautreau's
Stella!
August
La Petite Grocery
Coquette
Emeril's
Peche
Patois
Root
La Boca

ETA: Just outside of the top, and certainly debatable would be Domenica, MiLa, Herbsaint, Galatoires, Iris, and Clancy's.
