Going up for Mardi Gras. Trying to find some places that will offer a nicer/different experience than I get here in BR, yet still be palatable to an 8 and 10 year old that are fairly picky eaters. Googling has led me to lots of places that have kids menus but are very pedestrian, or interesting places that don't seem to offer anything in the way of "basics" for the kids.

I may have to shove a Shake Shack burger in them and then tell them to sit quietly while the wife and I enjoy a nice meal, but I'd like to avoid that if I can

most finer dining in NYC is for adults. Most places I was in didn't have much fare for kids with picky eating habits. Better stick to pizza and what not in little italy.

im not sure a kid menu exists for picky eaters. isn't that the whole point of a kid menu?

I don't think I was clear in my original post. Research has shown that for the most part, places that offer a kids menu are also the places that a very pedestrian themselves, such as pizza, bbq, hamburgers, or the Applebees/Chilli's type places.

I'm trying to find something that strikes a balance, or at the least a place that would be able to accommodate the kids even if a true "kids menu" isn't available.

I guess a better original post would have been "People that took your kids to NYC, where's a good place to eat that isn't a chain or a pizza joint"

most places will usually make some pasta and red sauce, or a burger and fries for a kid. I mean unless you are taking the kids to La Bernadine or something, you should be fine.

Mexican or Italian are good choices for this. Don't think Daniel or Per Se are appropriate for kids.

check out John's on 12th and Mexican Radio in Nolita

Not sure exactly what they like but I'll throw in a suggestion for The Meatball Shop. Basically you pick a type of meatball and the sauce that comes with it and they serve them as sliders or as just the meatball. You can do something similar for dessert with ice cream sandwiches.

It isn't what I would call a kid place, but it is good, cheap and very relaxed atmosphere. Potentially a good option for lunch one day.

Also, if you are walking around and come across a Milk Bar, I highly suggest going in and grabbing a couple of the cake truffles. They come in a variety of flavors and I have enjoyed them all. Birthday Cake, Pineapple Upside Down Cake and Capt'n Crunch Cake have been my favorites. They typically have interesting flavors of soft serve as well.

While you're there, I highly suggest getting the pork bun for yourself.

I take my kids to dinner all the time in Manhattan, you shouldn't have any problems. Go early, before 6:30 and you should be fine. You're gonna want to avoid the Michelin starred places of course but there are plenty of really good reataurants in neighborhoods where people actually live, like soho, the west village, etc where locals eat with their kids. I took my kids to Perry St, a Jean George reataurant, Christmas day for dinner and had a great time. Just go early and you should be able to basically eat anywhere you want.

My kids love Becco in the Theatre District. Big menu but still fine dining. Italian with plenty of kid options. Err on the side of a nicer dining experience and give your kids something to remember other than pizza or a burger.

Carnegie Deli. Order the Reuben and split it amongst your family and the table next to you.

Ray's pizza is also yummy and aplenty.
