Minecraft - Anyone out there?

My boy, 9 years old, loves playing this game. Will get on every night and play with different kids. I have tried to watch him, but I just cannot get into that game.
What's the appeal of it for kids or anyone in general?

Not just kids. This board had a large following for a while, and I'm sure many still play it.
It's a fun game.

Yeah, I broadened that statement a little.
My cousin is a big PC gamer and I ask him and he said one of his friends does awesome shite on it, building random stuff and what not, but my boy just builds crappy looking tanks and flips a switch to shoot a cannon and tnt.

Sorry, dupe...
But to GnarCat, same with my son. After dinner and homework, all he does every night. Weekends we have to make him go outside cause he wants to live on the game. I sit and watch with him and he is playing with kids and literally all they do it bitch or backstab each other.

That's actually pretty cool. I'm sure you'd rather him do that than run around on GTA killing hookers.

I couldn't get into the regular version, but the mod versions can be fun. With the Tekkit packs you can build nuke plants and all sorts of shite to power machines to do everything for you, so basically you can just build to your hearts content.
It's basically virtual legos/construx/tinker toys/erector set.
It's a lot better of a game to play for kids than kids that just go around killing the shite out of each other in Halo or whatever.

Touché! He has always enjoyed legos and building stuff so no doubt the game is right up his alley. I have just always been more of a sports/shooter type gamer. I would like to show some interest in it with him, it is just very hard to do.

This is what I am talking about. We got him a 360 for Christmas so he plays on that. He used to play on the computer or my wife's phone. How do you go about getting mod packs? Do they cost money?
One thing I do find funny about the game is when he will kill pigs and he has pork chops.

It is Lego's/Lincoln Logs/Tinker Toys for the modern age.
It's an outlet for creativity.

I don't think the consoles have a lot of mods, I think you have to play the PC version for most of stuff I mess with.
It's all free, at least what I have played with.
I played Tekkit Lite and a few Feed The Beast packs. You can build your own pack of whatever mods you like the best as well, but that is a little harder.
Tekkit and FTB are easy though. Tekkit packs launch through the Technic launcher you download. They have a ton of mod packs. Hexxit is more based on a RPG where you build weapons and storm castles, Tekkit Lite is more based on machines and building, and Tekkit is an exploration based mod with the goal of going to the Moon. With the launcher you basically sign in with your minecraft id, pick the pack and it downloads and launches the game with everything installed. No work to do. FTB has their own launcher that works the same way and ton of different mod packs as well.
It also helps to get a texture pack, the minecraft graphics kill my eyes. I use the sphax texture packs mainly.

Everquest Next Landmark is taking the idea of Minecraft to a whole new level.

Awesome!
Yeah, he wanted some "skins" last night so I made him show me and it was a "Feed the Beasts" skin pack, not sure if it is similar to what you just mentioned. I went ahead and paid $1.99 for it.

Yep, that's one thing that gets me. Of all the realistic games out there, he plays one that looks like I played when I was a kid. I will ask him about them tonight.

Yeah there are some impressive builds out there. There is a Harry Potter World one that just has this insane build of Hogwarts and the village below.
The best one I have ever seen though was the freakin exact scale Star Trek Next Gen Enterprise. It was just freakin insane.
