Is this something I can accomplish myself? If so, what tools/steps are involved to not mar the existing rear sight and slide?

Yes but much easier with a sight pusher tool, some sights are in there real tight too for example Colt XSE. Use a vice with pads. Brass punches will usually be way to soft to get them out.

I have this one:

sightpusher.com

I've changed out 3 or 4 sets of sights on them and have used them to drift the rear sight on the M&P for an Apex striker block with the trigger kit. The only downside is that the metal edge on the pusher part can leave a small mark on sights. but the easiest fix to this would be to put a little liquid silicone on it.
