I like and appreciate HD for sport broadcasts, but for some reason I find HD and Blu Ray annoying for shows and movies. Anyone else get distracted by it feeling too much like the actors are "there" in the room with you? Seeing films in HD, particularly after seeing them for decades in some cases without HD, is just off-putting.

Old age getting to me, I suppose.

You might need to change your TV/Picture Settings.

Trying switching back to grainy SD full-time, I think your opinion would change.

Personally, watching stuff I watched in the 80s, 90s, and 2000s in upconverted HD is almost like a new experience (old school disney/pixar etc is a joy to watch in HD).

You might be getting the "soap opera effect" and might need to change some of your settings.

I'm with you. I like HD and BluRay for sports and nature shows, but I prefer everything else in SD. Watching The Lord of the Rings in BluRay ruined it for me. I don't like everything being so clear that I can see the swords clearly missing, punches clearly missing, etc.

It's just a setting on your TV?

Sounds like you're describing the Soap Opera Effect some TV can have if the settings are off.

Otherwise, no...I like images to be as clear as possible. Stood in front of an Ultra HD TV at Best Buy a few weeks ago and it made me hate my current TV.

It might be the soap opera effect...I've definitely experienced that early on in the life of HD. But I really don't think that's the case...Yeah, I want Raiders of the Lost Ark to look a little gritty and not like it was filmed yesterday with an HD camcorder.

I wont watch anything unless its in HD. I've turned into a snob when it comes to that.

As others have said, Soap Opera Effect.

Depending on your brand of TV the settings that cause this could have different names.

When I first got my most recent HDTV the settings were so high that it could literally see through green screens.

Find your brand and model owners thread on AVS Forums.
