Elementary school takes lunches away from students owing account balances

A group of up to 40 students at Uintah Elementary in Salt Lake City had their lunches taken away and then thrown in the trash due to outstanding balances on their accounts, as reported by the Salt Lake Tribune.
Erica Lukes, a parent of one of the students, told the newspaper, "It's despicable. These are young children that shouldn't be punished or humiliated for something the parents obviously need to clear up."
Lukes' daughter, fifth-grader Sophia Isom, told KSL-TV that a district employee took her lunch away and said, "Go get a milk." Sophia recalled, "I came back and asked, 'What's going on?' Then she handed me an orange. She said, 'You don't have any money in your account, so you can't get lunch.’”

Stupid if they were going to throw the lunches away anyways. Parents need to not be pieces of shite though.

The kids can't eat cause their parents didn't pay?

You wouldn't think this would be a problem in Mormon country.

I remember when I was in school there was a kid in my class who consistently never had money for lunch. The school sent notices home but they NEVER denied the child food. I would raise hell if that were my kid. Of course, if that were my kid, the point would be moot. The money would be there or my child would bring his lunch.

Well the school I went to had meal tickets. If you didn't have the money, they politely told you "Take it back to the tray you got it."
It sucks but even when I was in 4th grade and that happened, I was pissed at my parents, not the school.

Private school. Plus it was right by the cashier and they would watch to make sure you didn't spit in it or anything.

I got that. But it's late and that sentence didn't make any sense.

Oh my bad. Yeah, not my proudest moment as far as sentence structure goes.

I fail to see the issue here. Food cost money, either send some money with you kids or a pack lunch.

The food still cost money after taking it from the kids and throwing straight it in the garbage.

I know in ascension parents are given several opportunities to pay the lunch money for their children. If you don't have the money send a couples of bucks for the day so the kids can eat or send a sandwich. These parents are not unaware of the situation. It's easy to sensationalize an issue involving children and the general public goes insane. If you have been to a public school you'd see most of these kids get too many calories anyway.

I used to love have all kinda money on my account. I would get an extra pizza or nuggets and like three cookies.

What kid has such crappy parents that they don't provide a simple couple of dollars for lunch?
