I'm in the "I don't see how this is good in any way" camp.

If he wants to be the next "Johnny Football" sensation, I'm totally fine with it if he's a Heisman finalist each year.

tNCAA may be a cluster frick, but even they could see thru this razor thin charade.

You're missing the point you criticizer of wannabe lawyers, you.

T-shirts with his name or likeness are not allowed. T-shirts with abstractions like "Buga Nation" are not specifically him. Buga Nation does not even make sense as a direct reference to a specific person. Buga might be a direct reference depending on other content. Buga Nation is an abstraction or a slogan. You're entitled to think it's razor thin, but if the shirts don't say Leonard and don't have his picture, they don't.

To explain my point in an entirely different context: If Sean Combs, the owner of Sean Jean clothing, were to have a son-- Leonard-- and he nicknamed Leonard "Lil' Sean", then decided to open a kid's line of clothing called "Lil' Sean", do you think his son Leonard should then be disqualified from earning a football scholarship? Personally, I think that sounds ridiculous; and in that case, Lil' Sean would be the verbatim replication of a specific person's nickname.

I'm not pretending to know how anyone will judge this if it does need to be looked into, but... in my opinion... it's a waste of time.

If you'll notice, I italicized "in my opinion" this time... it was there in my previous post, too. (it's in the part you quoted, by the way... so you don't have to go back and re-read everything) That was my way of pointing out that nobody should confuse my opinion with that of an authority on the matter-- because I'm not. You could perhaps say... in legal parlance... that those words constitute a disclaimer of sorts.

I point this out now because-- by accusing me of being a wannabe lawyer-- you seem to not understand what those words mean. If you want to start appearing smart so that you can employ smarm and condescension in future posts a little more successfully, you should take my friendly advice about where you went wrong to heart. I'm just trying to be helpful here so you don't end up looking... suspect. Best of luck to you.

LF might want to go ahead and join the new players union so he might have some help if he needs it!

Your post was thoughtful, but you have to understand that the NCAA is free to act at its discretion. It doesn't have to respect technical boundaries or legal fictions; it isn't a court and doesn't have any of the restrictions placed on the legal process. If they smell bullshite, they can take whatever action they want.

I can't imagine the degree of angst you caused your English teachers in school.

How is BUGA an abstraction? There is only one BUGA. Maybe your thinking of copyright issues?

: the state of someone who is not paying attention to what is happening or being said : an abstracted state...LINK

They loved me. I was so good I got to go to college for free.

1) Please see the 2nd definition from the link you provided (which you somehow passed on the way to the third definition, which is irrelevant):

abstraction = a general idea or quality rather than an actual person, object, or event : an abstract idea or quality

2) Please see the relevant part from my post:

quote:

abstractions like "Buga Nation" are not specifically him. Buga Nation does not even make sense as a direct reference to a specific person. Buga might be a direct reference depending on other content. Buga Nation is an abstraction or a slogan.

In accordance with the definition, Buga = actual person. Buga Nation = "a general idea or quality rather than an actual person, object, or event". Did you not see where I make a distinction between "Buga" being a potentially direct reference/name of an actual person and "Buga Nation" being an abstraction?

The only part of your post that is technically on the right track is where your question implies that BUGA is not an abstraction. Again, if you actually attempted to read my post instead of looking for a way to try and one up me, you would see that I'm not contesting that. I clearly make a distinction that BUGA NATION is abstract... in contrast to BUGA.

Anyway, I don't have a beef with you. You were a smartass in your first reply to me, so I had a little fun in being a smartass back. Nothing personal. You're entitled to your opinions. But I don't think any further replies between us are going to go anywhere but circles from here, and I doubt you're interested in discussing semantics any further.

Odd, most English teachers prefer their students to be more succinct, or to the point with fewer words.

And since there is only one BUGA to my knowledge, any and all uses of any slogan etc using BUGA is directly related to the origin. No amount of twisting words will ever change that.

We're all good bro. Though you should really work on the being more succinct thing, nobody likes reading novelettes in a forum like this.

Can we all agree that if the LSU compliance office allows it, Leonard is in the clear?

I agree he should be fine. My only concern is the NCAA saying he is endorsing it somehow...but one would think the proper research was done and everything is ok.
