I'm opposed to suicide by illegal immigration. I'm for a pathway to legal residence status as long as they don't become citizens. I know they will never produce in proportion to the benefits they draw - but it is an answer. I don't want to reward/encourage lawbreakers at the expense of people who obeyed our laws, and did things the correct way.
Or, at least they cannot vote for 25 years following their initiation of the process, so the political nature of it is lessened greatly. It is a fundamentally different nation - literally overnight - if this becomes a reality. The anchor babies ( no other country does this - by the way - illegal Spanish immigrants in Italy have a baby - the Italians send all of these Spanish citizens back to Spain, for example) have been bad enough - but legalizing all the border crossers - (and, most of them are sincerely seeking a better life) has been/will continue to be a disaster as this nation becomes increasingly socialized.
We already have enough of our own layabouts/poorly educated/no job skills population - we don't need to mainstream and import millions more - just a continuing self-inflicted wound that seems at odds with American values.

They were forced to pay taxes (at a higher rate) than citizens......
A lot of them already are.

They can always turn around and go back where they came from.

OK. Thanks for that information. How insightful.

or if there were no income tax? Only a consumption/sales tax?
This is the answer, imo. It is also the reason I don't oppose in state tuition for illegal immigrants in the state of Texas as long as they meet the residence requirements. They have essentially paid as much into the system as anyone else in their economic position.
They're paying sales taxes. Those who are being payed legally are paying payroll taxes they don't get anything back from, for now. They're paying property taxes built into their rent. Most of them wouldn't be paying anything in income taxes anyway, or getting something back from the government.
They're only here because jobs are available. If I have any beef with them it's them taking jobs from Americans and driving down wages, not taxes.

Just that they can be here (which they already are) as long as they contribute.
The first generation will always be in the net "negative" income tax bracket, so I'm not sure of what point you're trying to make?
The bottom 50% in the U.S. pay ZERO income tax - they do pay payroll taxes - or rather, payroll taxes are paid by their employers out of their gross income, and that is what I presume Spidey was referring to).
As it is, they are mainly paid cash, which is only taxed when they spend it. They send a good bit of it home, where it benefits Mexico's economy - not ours.

What's going to stop the kid from North Dakota saying, "I'm an illegal immigrant - I've lived in Texas for a year."
???

Why can't we just issue them a card at the border, they are here anyway at least they would be documented.

And they werent reimbursed for it, nah I wouldnt mind then.
I think there should be a guest worker program that provides a clear, viable (meaning possible for the typical illegal) path to citizenship. Part of that path would be a probationary period where they are a citizen less voting rights and access to gov entitlements (10 yrs?) and then full citizenship.
