Cold winter hard on crawfish supply
People planning Super Bowl crawfish boils this weekend may be out of luck. Crawfish farmers from across Louisiana say the cold has kept crawfish scarce all winter, and now many ponds are iced over. The prolonged cold also means crawfish aren't eating and are likely to be smaller than normal at the peak of crawfish season, says farmer David Savoy of Church Point. People may even have to order ahead at the peak of the season, says Craig Lutz, an LSU AgCenter professor and aquaculture specialist. "I think it's fair to say that when we get to Mardi Gras and we get to Easter, we're definitely going to be behind what we would be in a normal season. There'll still be crawfish available. But I think people are going to have to plan a lot better to make sure they have crawfish on those weekends when they want them," he says. AgCenter aquaculture and crawfish specialist Mark Shirley is optimistic about the spring and summer harvest but says the supply is going to be short for the Super Bowl, a weekend when there's high demand. Savoy, who has farmed crawfish for 40 years, says it's the slowest start he's ever seen to the season. The Associated Press has the full story.

Isn't it supposed to be like 70 this weekend? Im sure one part of a week isn't going to wreck the entire season

I remember when the Super Bowl was to early to even plan a crawfish boil.

Dude, it has been quite a cold winter so far.
I'm sure if those farmers could get those bugs out, they would. They don't like not being able to sell and make money for this weekend.

I'm going to eat 10 lbs tomorrow. Don't care what it cost. I have the need for some bugs.

I think what TW says has merit.

The "season" has become so long that even slight differences are noticed more.

things you will never hear a crawfish supplier say:

"boy we are in real heavy supply this year, things should be relatively cheaper"

"this is perfect crawfish weather!"

"we are gonna have to give these things away since we have so many"

Cormiers. Although my attorney just informed me that they have increased to 6.99 per lb. A dollar more than last week. I may go with 5lbs and supplement with boiled shrimp and more Budwieser.

Remember when they were 10¢ a lb., the whole concept for having crawfish boils was it was cheap way to feed a bunch of people. Hell, shrimp are cheaper now, and that is ridiculous.

Yup, I got extremely shitty thanks to Les Miles. Still the earliest I've ever had crawfish. Still seems weird having a boil before Mardi Gras.

frick those guys. If I'm going to pay those prices I'm going to have crabs, shrimp, steak, lobster, etc. Crawfish is not worth that much to me.
