and south Louisiana if it had gotten this bad. Shame the people in charge take initiative/precautions.

This should answer all your questions about "why is this closed?? Why are people acting so stupid?"

(yes, I stole this from reddit. Don't care. Wanna fight about it?)

I drove to work this morning and realized that if you can drive in the ice and not encounter another vehicle, you're fine. As soon as people see another vehicle shite like this happens.

HOW!?

Also, as mentioned Atlanta got it really bad as well. Couple people I know gave up after trying to drive home after about 5 hours and just abandonded their cars and walked. Others that didn't have any hope at all due to distance had to sleep in a restaurant booth.

There have been so many false alarms of snow over the years that everyone around here blew off the dusting of snow forecast.
What people forgot to check was that the temperature was only 20 degrees yesterday.
most times when we do get these snow forecasts, the temperature is 45 degrees. so the roads are never an issue.
hell, the snow is still on the ground this morning.

Do they not salt the roads there?

I figured Birmingham and Atlanta would have that. I knew Baton Rouge and Houston didn't....but they are on the gulf coast.

Nashville, Memphis, St Louis all put a brine and salt solution down. It makes a HUGE difference so long as the solution they use doesn't get washed away before it freezes- especially for elevated freeways.

It took me 9 hours to get home from work yesterday that is only 20 miles away. To be honest I saw a lot worse than most of those pictures. I just only hope that everybody was able to find shelter and they don't start finding bodies in cars stranded in all that mess.

Yep. I don't know what it is for bham, but in Atlanta it's not supposed to get above 30 all day today, sooooo who knows if shite will be back to normal again tomorrow either.

This rarely happens do we don't really have that preparation in place for it.

This headline on James Spann's TV station about says it all:
quote:

Jeff Co (Birmingham) EMA: All interstates and numbered roads considered impassable

Not all bridges... all roads.

True. It's mildly irritating when people on the internet are like "LOL look at the south! They can't handle the snow! People in NY deal with this every day!!!"

Well no shite, the north deals with this every day so they have proper procedures in place to carry on as normal. We don't.
