Who has had the better career? Will either win a major again. If so, who?

Federer has 17 grand slam titles. A streak of 237 weeks at #1 from 04-08.

Tiger has 14 majors, 11x player of the year, 10x leading money winner.

Fed on career to date, but people will beat him over the head with the 10-23 Nadal head-to-head.

Fed maybe has one more major at best. Tiger 2-4 IMO.

Tiger, no one is close to him head to head.

I've always wondered which is more difficult… beating the field over 4 days in golf, or winning 6 or 7 head to head matches in a row in tennis.

I choose golf, but golf has a MUCH longer prime so the players can pad stats more.

I'm a Federer fan, but at this point there is no denying that Nadal is better. Tiger would obviously not have as many majors if his prime overlapped with Jack's. He might prove to be a better golfer, but he wouldn't have as many majors.

Has to be golf. Let's be real...for the elite players those majors aren't even competitive until you get down to 16 or so.

Golf any random joe can have the weekend of his life and win. Also one bad shot(see last years Masters 3 shot swing) can ruin a weekend of overly good play while getting broken here and there isn't a death sentance.

Interesting question. I think styles determine a lot of tennis matches. But the better player should win out 80% of the time.

In golf. All it takes is for a good player to get hot at the right time. If he blocks out the mental game he has a shot.

Tiger easily. Federer may not even be the best of his generation.

Federer may be playing against the greatest tennis player ever. Tiger's closest competitor would have a hard time cracking the top 20 all-time golfers.

obviously it depends on your draw and the level of your competition but I'd say a more dominant tennis player should win majors more frequently than a golfer for two reasons:

1) there's a much bigger field in a golf tournament
2) you only have to beat one player at a time to win the tournament. your earlier mistakes are wiped clean each time you win a match whereas in golf the score for the tournament is cumulative so your thursday and friday mistakes stay with you

If you look at the resumes of great golfers there's probably some support for this point of view - there are a lot of guys like nadal, federer, (maybe doka soon), sampras, aggasi, borg, mac, connors who won a lot of majors in what amounts to a fairly short career window. I think there are only three golfers with 10 or more major wins for their careers whereas there are seven tennis players who have won 10 or more majors.

that's an over-statement. Phil is already a top 14-20 golfer by his majors count (and he's not done).

Granted Tiger has not had the depth of contemporaries like Nicklaus (Trevino, Palmer, Player, Watson) but there are a lot of really good golfers today if not a deep field of all time great golfers.

Phil is easily a top 20 golfer. You could also make cases for Ernie Els and Vijay Singh. Rory will likely be top 20 after all is said and done.

The field is much deeper in golf. Look at the diversity of major winners compared to tennis.

That is retarded. Nadal, federer, and djokovic are all three top 10 all time at least. I dunno why federer is the comparison in this thread when it is clear that nadal is the GOAT but whatever

Phil is top ten and knocking on top 5.
42 wins, 5 majors, 3 NCAA individual championships, and US amateur championship is exceptional golf at all levels.

Right now:
Woods
Nicklaus
Hogan
Snead
Palmer
Mickelson
Watson

Shorter careers in tennis and no depth. Same three to four guys win the grand slam events in any era.

Federer = GOAT in tennis. So, Federer. And I think he will win one, maybe two, more majors before he's finished.

Nadal has always and will always be 5 years younger than Federer. Nadal is also one of the best tennis players of all time. No one should hold it against Federer that a much younger, all-time great player has a winning record against him. Obviously, that record will not get any better with time.

Federer is still the GOAT.
