Has anyone here put their child on growth hormones? The endocrinologist has suggested we should consider growth hormone treatments for our son who is about 3 years delayed in growing. He's 11 and is smaller than our 9 year old and about the same size as our 7 year old girl.

If done properly by an experience physician, Hormone therapy can do great things.

Due to my pituitary gland not functioning properly, I had to take growth hormone shots every day from early in middle school to late in high school. Currently I'm about 5'9, without the shots I'd definitely be much much shorter. If your insurance covers it, I would very much recommend that you do. My cousin also had to receive treatment and she is thankful that she did as well.

Thanks. We've been seeing the same endocrinologist for 3 years now. He says his growth plates and GH is in the normal range it just keeps getting more and more delayed.

He's got esteem issues as well but swears his size is a not a problem. He mentions his size in other conversations so we know it's on his mind.

I would take your doctors advice, nobody wants to be a manlet when they grow up. No offense to your son but life will be "easier" if he is taller.

My parents considered putting me on them when I was younger. They decided not to and I was very small through school until I finally hit a major growth spurt during my Junior and Senior year of high school where I ended up around average height, taller than both of my older brothers. Some kids are just late bloomers.

Agreed.

If it were indicated, I would have no reservations about treating my own children with it.

my daughter did the shots for about 2 years. she had always been around the 10 percentile on the growth chart then dropped off. They were estimating her to finish up around 4'8". With the shots she made it to just above 5'.

It is gonna be a battle with your insurance but if it is covered then there isn't a downside.

There are side effects of GH, such as anger issues which he has always had. He's got ADHD and anxiety issues as well. Kid can't seem to catch a break. He was born with the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck. Sometimes I wonder if he had a loss of blood flow to his brain for a period of time that may have caused some of his medical issues.

Very plausible.

Had a friend receive treatment in high school, really helped his self esteem. Only down side for him was no sports during the treatment, he sucked anyways...
