I want to swap the LS 5.3 engine in my Avalanche for a LS 6.0 or 6.2. How hard would it be? I haven't done an engine swap in 20 years. School me.

Shouldn't be hard to do the swap. Don't know if you have a 4L60 in yours or a 6L80. IIRC, the bigger motors came with a 4L80 first, then a 6L80. Best bet would be you pulling the engine/tranny combo.

You'd also have to send your ECU to get a custom flash, or take the one from the donor engine and get a custom flash on that.

That is just the standard protocol stuff. If you can actually do the mechanical parts of the swap in a day or two, I'd plan being without a truck for a few weeks getting the kinks worked out

this would be your best bet. Get a non AFM motor,ls6 to be exact.

You having some issues with your motor?

Would have to be the same model year for plug and play.

MJ2 is right. Don't get an AFM motor. IIRC, they are the 2007+ 5.3s

Get a 6.0 from a 2500 if you want to go that route. You should snag the trans also

Eta: LS6 or LY6 mated with a truck transmission. 4L80E for younger than 07, and 6L90E for after 07. I think the auto for the LS6 is either a 700r4 or a 4L60E IIRC. The LS6/4L60E/6L80E stuff out of corvettes and the like will be harder to mate with your everything than the LY6/6L90E. One is for a car and one is for a truck

I have heard them knocking on heaven's door on more than one occasion

You can get rid of both AFM and torque mgmt with some $$$ and a tune though. Supposedly the fix that GM came up with was to replace the pistons/rings. Mainly happened on 07-09 trucks

yeah I know you can but it's so cost prohibitive you may as well do a motor swap.

How are the transmissions holding up with the extra 100hp and tq?

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't it "basically" all plug and play, with a flashed ECU?

any luck with getting an AFM lifter to unstick?
Dealing with an 09 Z71 right now with the intake cam on #7 stuck closed.

Was thinking about emptying half the oil out the motor and dumping some ATF in and running it to see if it unclogs the lifter or the port going from the Oil manifold to the lifter.

It shouldn't be difficult as far as engine swaps go. I'd bet an engine from the same year would be pretty much plug and play.

I'd swap in an 8.1 vortec if I could find one. It's probably the most durable gas burner ever built by anybody.

ive tried in 4 diff engines with seafoam it work on 3 for diff lengths of time. 2 of them eventually broke the lifter.

Put a ls1 lifters in them and change the plate under the intake with the solinoids(sp)
Then have the computer reflashed.

I love the 8.1 but it is very expensive to modify.
I can buy used 6.0 does for less than $800 all day. put a cam in then reflash ecu. makes Over 450hp and cost about 2500$ installed.
