Wife and I are looking to make some floating shelves. Anyone know where to find scrap wood or a good selection of older lumber that we could buy to make said shelves? We would be doing all the painting/staining. Ideally some thick pieces of aged wood that we could buy for cheap..any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Call salvage companies or used building materials places.

Look up old barn boards in your area. Cheap might be a problem.

Try "antique woods of Louisiana" in sunshine, La. They sell salvaged lumber from all over the United States.

In south AR, there's a big problem in rural areas w/ thieves disassembling old barns, storage buildings, garages, etc, stealing the wood and either selling it outright or making it into something (e.g. picture frames) and selling. You might get permission from the landowner and do the same thing legally.
