I know there is a 300+ page thread devoted to liquor on the first page, but this may not fit in there. Plus I can't read all 300 pages for recommendations.

I had someone do me a huge favor and I would like to repay him with a bottle. Anyone have any recommendations? I would like it to be a nice bottle, but not necessarily a $75-100 nice. However, if someone says that the upper price range really makes a difference I would be inclined to splurge.

Thanks.

You know sazeracs are mixed drinks right? You'd be looking for a nice bottle of rye as the liquor base, but I'm a little confused with respect to what you're asking for.

A good bottle of rye (750 ml) will cost $30 to $50. Sazerac does make a rye under their own label. It will be at the low end of that price range.

Right, I've had that label. It's fine. My favorite rye right now is michter's. it's around the $50 mark, give or take.

Here's a catalog of the different brands of rye whiskey available from KL Wines. Some pretty good prices.

Bulleit ~$15-20
Rittenhouse Rye 100 proof ~$20-25
High West Double Rye ~$30
Willet 4 year rye ~$35-40
Michter's rye ~$45-50
EH Taylor rye ~$60-65

If you can find at retail or at a price that doesn't freak you out, the following would be worth the extra money
Sazerac 18
Thomas H Handy
Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye

It's interesting that rye was at one time the predominant whiskey in this country, probably due to its importation from Canada during Prohibition. A lot of the classic cocktails like the Manhattan call for rye whiskey, not the bourbon that they're commonly made with today.

Most grocery store liquor departments have a very limited selection of rye whiskeys if they have any at all. Best bet at these places is Jim Beam Yellow Label, around $20.

It's popularity goes back further than prohibition. Washington distilled rye at mount Vernon. Rye was the American whiskey. Bourbon was a later addition and was the "frontier whiskey" for it's early life.
