"Because he liked the name" - true story - the name of the character in the song is named after the late, great Levon Helm (singer/drummer of The Band), because Sir Elton and Bernie Taupin "liked the name". (And The Band was their favorite band during that period.)

Although this is getting fairly "Music Boardy" - Elton and Bernie both answered the same ad for a songwriting workshop and got paired up - more or less - by chance.

I love stories like that.
