Reaffirming and emphasizing a position he's held for a while:
quote:

“We will end the failed war on drugs that believes that incarceration is the cure of every ill caused by drug abuse. We will make drug treatment available to as many of our non-violent offenders as we can and we will partner with our citizens to create a society that understands this simple truth: every life has value and no life is disposable,” Christie said during his inaugural speech this morning.

The governor expressed desire to help those struggling with drug addiction in a bipartisan manner. “And, while government has a role in ensuring the opportunity to accomplish these dreams, we have now learned that we have an even bigger role to play as individual citizens. We have to be willing to play outside the red and blue boxes the media and pundits put us in; we have to be willing to reach out to others who look or speak differently than us; we have to be willing to personally reach out a helping hand to a neighbor suffering from drug addiction, depression or the dignity stripping loss of a job,” said Christie.

quote:

“I don’t believe the only weapon we use against the drug problem is incarceration. I just don’t think it’s worked. And I think we see it over and over again that there’s evidence that it hasn’t.”

quote:

"The war on drugs, while well-intentioned, has been a failure," Christie said Monday during a speech at The Brookings Institution. "We're warehousing addicted people everyday in state prisons in New Jersey, giving them no treatment."

What has he done as governor to back up his words?

Because what a politician says means jack shite.

Yep.

He's in an executive position with real power to influence this issue in new jersey and I'd like to see what he's done to back up this rhetoric.

Still not gonna change my opinion and vote against him though.

So his solution is to keep the market black and send people to rehab?

Legalize is how you end the war not diversion programs.

It needs to be mentioned that drug treatment is not some magic pill. The idea that if only it would be offered to drug addicts they would come arunnin' for it, is just a fallacy.

I'm not saying that decriminalization is a bad idea, just that we should be ready for more negative consequences than is being mentioned. The threat of incarceration has been a useful tool in getting people into treatment and getting them sober. Without that threat, many would never opt for treatment.

So? He's not the only politician with the stance, nor is he the best.

Its still a pretty big deal when a governor of one of the largest states, proclaims that the war on drugs is a failure. Sounds like its an issue Christie believes that, having won a 2nd term and by a historic margin, he can now pursue.

It's not as important as action, but even saying something is significant IMO. If democrats in the legislature have the balls to follow him, I'm sure he'll get something done.

portugal is in a different scenario because they have socialized medicine so their stats will be different than ours.

However decriminalizing small usage amounts will make things better as we won't be locking people in cages as often.

It's way past time to end the war on poverty that has been a complete failure and we've spent trillions of dollars on it. End that as well.
