Greatest company ever, or are they going too far in tracking you?

Amazon plans to start shipping items you haven’t even ordered yet — betting that you will.
The Seattle company just received a patent for what it calls “anticipatory shipping,’’ a system that first predicts your future purchases based on such things as previous buys, site searches and even how long you linger on a particular online item, The Wall Street Journal reported.
It then plans to ship the items to the warehouse nearest you before you even press the button to complete the purchase.
The company may also even actually load the items onto trucks in anticipation of shipping them to you.
Amazon says the system is designed to cut down on shipping delays, which “may dissuade customers from buying items from online merchants.”

Amazon, the Journal reported, says it may box and ship products that it expects customers in a specific area will want, based on previous orders and other factors it gleans from its customers' shopping patterns, even before they place an online order.
Among those other factors: previous orders, product searches, wish lists, shopping cart contents, returns and other online shopping practices.
"It appears Amazon is taking advantage of their copious data," Sucharita Mulpuru, a Forrester Research analyst, told the Journal. "Based on all the things they know about their customers they could predict demand based on a variety of factors."
To minimize the cost of unwanted returns, Amazon said it might consider giving customers discounts or even make the delivered item a gift.

take my money, amazon

i like the part about how if they ship it to someone who doesn't buy it, they are considering letting the customer keep it as a gift. I'd imagine that this logarithm will get figured out, and someone will figure out how to get a whole bunch of free stuff before they stop doing it.

I'm curious, does Amazon charge taxes on purchases in your area? They just started doing this at the beginning of the year here in Tennessee. This could possibly persuade people to go ahead and pick the item up at the store instead of waiting a couple of days, assuming the prices were the same. On the other hand, I would definitely wait every time if I could avoid the taxes.

Without a doubt. They have phenomenal customer service, great employees, an adapting business model, amazon prime instant video, and it goes on and on
I can't think of something I don't like.

My only issue is that they are not nearly as competitive on price as they once were.
Having said that - once I've gone Prime, where Amazon was about 65% of my online purchases before, now it is closer to 90%.
GOAT? Maybe. Better than fighting Wal-Mart and/or the Mall? You bet your arse.

They are trying to eliminate the idea that having something shipped means waiting at all. They are going to get as close as possible to the instant gratification of going to a store to buy something.

They have to do this once they have a physical presence in the state, I believe. Won't be long before they are charging tax everywhere.
But we all report our taxes on online purchases anyway, so it doesn't really matter.

No, I still don't pay taxes

Wait, are you admitting to tax fraud here?
Shame on you.
