The world’s 85 richest individuals now own as much as the poorest half of the 7 billion global population, according to a report released by Oxfam on Monday.

The leading anti-poverty charity called on the global economic elite gathering in Davos this week for the World Economic Forum to “counter the growing tide of inequality” and prevent a static future in which only the rich have access to the best education and healthcare.

Isn't this touching? When have the masses ever had access to the best education and healthcare? They have always been limited to those who could afford to pay the most for them.

How much do the 3.5 billion poorest people own now versus 10 years ago in terms of total wealth? Have they benefitted during the last 10 years? Why is this information not made clear in the Oxfam report?

How did Oxfam measure individual wealth? Who provided the values for real estate holdings? How are values normalized for geography, i.e. is a pig in the United States worth the same as a pig in India?

Up to 80 per cent of the world’s middle classes will live in developing countries by 2030 thanks to surprising recent gains in poverty reduction, according to a United Nations report published on Thursday.

“Never in history have the living conditions and prospects of so many people changed so dramatically and so fast,” concludes the UN’s latest Development Report. “The world is witnessing an epochal ‘global rebalancing’.”

Partly as a result, the report found that worldwide extreme income poverty has plunged from 43 per cent in 1990 to just 22 per cent in 2008, including more than 500m being lifted out of poverty in China alone.

Exactly. The argument always centers on the wealth of the prosperous instead of the increasing prosperity of the lower/middle class. Why? Because these ppl are motivated by envy and hate instead of altruism.

Is the wealth of the "85 wealthiest" what makes the "3.5 billion poorest" poor?

THAT is the rhetorical question for which there is no leftist retort.

I agree, except I don't want them to consider my question as being rhetorical.

If the answer is yes, then let's hang the bastards!

If the answer is no, then so EFFIN' WHAT????
