Really? dumb hunh?
what is andre johnson really worth right now? What is more valuable to the Texans? a 2nd, 3rd or 4th round pick or a 33 year old WR? This blogger throws out Mallett for a 2nd

LINK

quote:

Perhaps the Houston Texans will be starting a quarterback in 2014 that was acquired via something other than a first round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Rumors swirling around the NFL, speculation that has made its way to Cleveland sports talk radio, are claiming that the Houston Texans, currently in possession of the first overall pick in the upcoming draft, could be interested in New England Patriots backup quarterback Ryan Mallett. Mallett, who has also been linked by some with the Cleveland Browns, could cost Houston a second round pick.

The Texans, a franchise that hasn't at all been shy about the fact that they are open to shopping their first round pick, will have to choose one of several options and likely do so before the start of free agency on March 11. Houston could hold onto the first pick and take one of three quarterbacks – Teddy Bridgewater out of Louisville, UCF's Blake Bortles, or Texas A&M phenom Johnny Manziel – or the Texans could grab defensive end Jadeveon Clowney.

Clowney's draft stock, which is already high, could skyrocket once he works out for NFL clubs next month. Texans owner Bob McNair offered high praise regarding the defensive prospect, saying the following earlier this week:

“He is a remarkable player. He's one of these players that is really a once-in-every-10-years kind of physical specimen that comes along. Mario Williams was that way. I think Clowney is actually a better athlete than Mario, so that kind of tells you what kind of player he can be.”

“Like many of these fellows who have these great physical attributes, they didn't have to work as hard in junior high school, in high school, and in college, to be a superlative athlete, because they had this natural ability.”

Houston trading down could prove to be risky business if the club wants Clowney. The St. Louis Rams hold the second overall pick, and several mock drafts that have been published over the past month have had the Rams taking the DE if he is on the board.

The Texans could fill two gaps by drafting Clowney first overall and then trading for Mallett. The 25-year old who was taken by the Patriots in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft has spent three seasons learning under future Hall of Fame QB Tom Brady. Mallett is listed at 6'6'' and 245 pounds, and there are knowledgeable football people who believe that he has the goods to star on Sundays.

Houston going this route would have a massive impact on the draft. It would leave the three top QB prospects on the board when the Rams, who aren't expected to take a quarterback and could also be willing to trade down, are called to the podium. St. Louis taking offensive tackle Jake Matthews would not be a surprise regardless of what the Texans do, meaning that the Jacksonville Jaguars, sitting at third overall in the draft, could have their pick of QBs.

And what of the Browns? Cleveland certainly needs a quarterback, and there are fans of the franchise out there who want the team to trade up to No. 1 overall in the draft in order to snag the young man known as Johnny Football. ESPN NFL Draft guru Mel Kiper Jr. is, in mid-January, predicting that the Texans will take Manziel this May.

Not everybody is convinced.

Rumors and teams utilizing gamesmanship through public comments are commonplace this time of year for teams that aren't prepping for conference championship games. You can now add “Clowney and Mallett to the Texans” to a list that is only going to grow and grow over the next two months.

when roster moves can be made, whether or not the Texans go after Mallett will be much clearer

here is Gil Brandt from NFL.com on Jan 6 throwing it out there
quote:

O'Brien likes big QBs. I could see #Texans trying to trade w #Patriots for Ryan Mallett, going diff direction in draft
3:00 PM - 6 Jan 2014

I think Houston will draft Clowney, play more 4-3 and the marketing for the reason they dont take JFF is "the defense is really the problem and BO'B can coach up the offense"

Who the frick said/thought that Ryan Mallett was any good?
mother fricking this.

I would agree that a 33 y/o WR with high mileage making lots of money isn't hugely valuable, but if anyone has less, it's mallet. Yes, Bo'B was there for one year with mallett, but if he showed that much potential, NE probably would have traded him by now.

Right now, I'd listen to offers for AJ, but it'll take more than a backup who's done absolutely nothing at the NFL level. And just a side note- neither has any bobby Petrino QB. When are NFL teams going to realize Bobby's "pro style" offense doesn't produce pro QB prospects?

FTR the Texans cant trade Johnson. The PR would be a disaster and they are going to take a hit when they cut Schaub

A 33 year old WR that is coming off a season in which he had the 7th most receiving years in the entire NFL and has proven himself as a very good WR at the NFL level on a year in and year out basis. They need Andre Johnson. Trading away your best WR to get a QB that has done absolutely nothing at the NFL level, but has potential, makes absolutely no sense.

I can see them trading for Mallet, but the idea of trading Andre Johnson for Ryan Mallet is retarded and there is absolutely no chance it is going to happen.

agree 100% Bridgewater is not a sure bet for the Texans nor the first QB taken

who would you prefer? JFF or Bridgewater or Bortles or the mallett/clowney combo?

they went 12-4 and 2-14 with him having almost identical stats. How much of a difference maker is he with his 88yds/g and a TD every 3.125 GAMES

getting out from under AJ's money wont be the priority this offseason but it will be next offseason. This Spring they have to deal with cutting Schaub and what to do with tate, Foster and Jonathon Joseph. Next offseason the looming massive J.J. Watt extension (he is still on his rookie deal) will probably cause an AJ move

check this out:

frankly AJ's recent production is the least of the argument, WR production is not hard to find these days

You think their problem this year was Andre Johnson? He is by far and away the best WR on the team. There is absolutely no value in the Texans trading Andre Johnson for Ryan Mallet. None. Zero.

re: Andre Johnson for Ryan Mallet?

quote:

Since when is Andre johnson so important? He compiled stats on a team that was routinely behind 20 pts throwing it 35+ times a game with garbage QBs

He had 109 for 1407 with 5tds in 16 games

There is a bigger picture here and how valuable is a 33yr old WR going into his 12th season these days in the NFL?

What is he worth on the trade market?

This is the correct answer. Honestly I think New England hangs up. HE'S 33 YRS OLD. His decline is just around the corner and is of no value (on the field) to the Texans without a QB to get the job done. If they dont trade him, he will just waste his last few remaining yrs of upper tier talent to a mediocre Texans team. If he were to go to New England, he would have a shot in the next 2-3 seasons at a Superbowl. New England can surely draft and develop another QB. It's win/win I believe. From a Houston standpoint, sure Mallett isnt proven, but he's developed for a few yrs under an all time great in a complex scheme, he definitely has the arm talent and would be familiar with new coach. They would also be able to hold onto their first rd pick and either draft another high ceiling WR to go along with Hopkins who has the talent of a true no.1. What's the difference between drafting someone like Bridgewater/Manziel or trading for Mallett? All three of those guys are on the same tier of talent.

re: Andre Johnson for Ryan Mallet?

there are a few on here insulting me for raising this hypothetical to discuss when they clearly dont understand the modern NFL

They are hung up on predicting AJ's future value by his past success and that is a fallacy for a player at his age.

Houston was 12-4 with a good defense, a pro bowl QB and pro bowl WR
Houston was 2-14 with a shite defense, a shite QB and a pro bowl WR

can AJ's 88y/g and 1 TD every 3 games be replaced by one or two cheaper WRs? absolutely

the deal breaker in this trade is not Mallett's uncertainty, it is AJ's contract. the real value of trading Mallett for AJ is one sided for Houston - they get rid of a massive contract. The risk of the deal is all on NE's side, they are taking on a very large contract for an old WR that is going to be expected to be a #1 WR and may not have the gas in the tank. Frankly whether mallett ever starts a game for them or is even average as a QB is irrelevant for Houston in the big picture.

Other than giving 37y/o Brady a potential #1 WR, what is the net positive for New England by taking on AJ's contract? is that potential #1 WR worth taking on that kind of financial obligation to a 33yr/o WR? That is completely counter-intuitive to the way the Pats are run under BB.

FTR Randy Moss was a 9yr vet, a well known malcontent and malingerer that only cost them a 4th rnd draft pick

Ultimately I say NE says no to this trade

which is why the Texans will take a qb in the draft. That way they don't give away AJ

re: Andre Johnson for Ryan Mallet?

this thread isnt really about AJ or mallett or some hypothetical trade

it is really about real value, perceived value, potential, risk and reward

what is AJ's real value to the market? with that contract probably not much
What is AJ's perceived value to the market? based on the fan responses on this thread amazingly high for a 33y/o WR
What is Mallett's real value to NE? to the League?
What is Mallett's perceived value to NE? to the League?

what is the value to Houston as a retooling franchise with a new coach getting rid of a huge contract for an aging player for a potential starting QB?

what is the value for NE of taking on a huge contract of an aging player (AJ) to preserve the short term options of an aging player (Brady)?

obviously these big picture risk assessments are the backbone of NFL front office operations, not just stats

I'm a fan of sending the 33rd pick overall to NE for Mallet and picking Clowney with the 1st pick.

Certainly more realistic than trading your best offensive player, even if he is 33 on opening day, for a QB with zero NFL starts.
