Different perspective on the chances of landing our top-5 protection.

I think more teams will tank this year than ever before due to the amount of NBA ready players. However, since there are more than one, some say 3-4, "standouts" in this draft, teams may be content with semi-tanking
i.e. If Lebron James is available in the draft, it's supertank for many teams, as in #1 pick or bust.
This year, I feel/hope that teams will be satisfied with a high-end lotto pick (3-6) rather than 1-2, thus leaving room for us to squeeze into the top-5 with a talented roster.
I really don't know who I would take with #1. It'd be between 3-5 different guys depending on team needs.
So I want to believe this is the mindset other franchises have.
Thoughts???

Will be interesting to see what Demps does if they don't end up with a top-5 pick, in addition to the no cap room

The situation isn't nearly as static as your post suggests.

Well its well-known that this is a loaded draft and top picks are coveted. But do Eastern Conference teams like NYK, DET, BOS, PHI start tanking now? Or fight for a playoff spot since they're only a few games out? The bottom could balance out a little since the East is so weak.

They have no 3 or 5

Doesn't mean it's not the best situation.
I get it, you want the team that you pay to see win games. But look at things past 1 or 2 games to 1 or 2 years. This team is not making the playoffs and at the rate we are going we are going to be in the worst possible position that an NBA team could be in – no playoffs, no draft pick and no cap room. With the way everything stands right now, tanking is our best option.
If we hadn't traded that pick or if half of our key players were healthy, maybe not, but that is not where we are currently at.

I really can't wait until, say, the 2016 season with this coveted draft class is evaluated on results.
OVERRATED!!!

We're right around the middle of the pack in terms of cap room. If we can dump Gordon's contract somehow and/or Evans's 11M/yr, we'll be well below the cap-line and be a potential bigtime FA player in the coming summers.

You said yourself that you haven't watched much college bball this year, so saying that with the kind of conviction that all-caps and multiple exclamation marks imply is probably not a good move on your part.

Like I said in the other thread, Gordon's contract still has next season plus the poison pill player option at $15M. No team is taking on that without us having to take on money and years.

you do understand that that doesn't mean anything?
If you're over the cap, you're over the cap.

I hate clichés, but: shite in one hand and wish in the other..

I've watched enough. I also know that people jizz themselves over potential draft picks and they don't work out 75% of the time. It's mostly hype, dude.

It's about assets, not necessarily the pick itself.

Really? Because last I checked the NBA fields 16 playoffs every year and I'm sure about 99% of the main players on those teams were drafted in the first round.
You don't understand, this isn't about tanking to get a specific player, this is about tanking because it's pretty much the only chance we have at adding a quality player to this team.

If you're over the cap, you're over the cap.
Ever heard of this thing they call luxury tax? Benson has deep pockets brother. 80% of the league is over the cap, we aren't alone. However,

We are alone in this situation^^

If you're over the cap, you can't sign free agents unless you pull off a sign and trade which is always a messy thing to do or sign a bench guy using the mid-level exception.

I assume you mean we "aren't" alone in that situation and even if we aren't, does it really make it better? We would still be stuck in proverbial purgatory.

I don't think you understand. They're over the cap and can only add FA's using 'exceptions'.
Having not been over the Luxury Tax for the 2013-2014 season, the Pels can add a player using the Mid-Level - 4 years at $5 million a year.
You're not getting much better that way.

Whom have you watched that you're lumping everyone in the overrated class?
I will admit that the hype for Wiggins is over blown.
I haven't seen this Embiid dude, but he's the one everyone clamoring about.
Julius Randle is a double double machine. If we moved Ryno in the offseason, I'd be cool with him.
Jabari Parker is as fluid a scorer that has come along in several years.
Keith Smart might have been #1 overall last year.
You're acting like this draft sucks as bad as last year. We better get one of these players, because with the lack of cap room, and God forbid we don't have a change at head coach, and no 1st rounder, Jesus, does it get more depressing than that?
