How often do you buy a warranty on an item?

?? And what kind of item do you think a warranty is absolutely necessary for?

It depends on what I'm getting. I'm not going to get a warranty for a $40 toaster. I'll get a warranty on an electronic device that's half a grand or better..

I get it on anything over probably $500ish. basically the amount of money I don't feel like paying again for the same thing

Absolutely nothing. Those warranties are money makers for the businesses. If they make money from them, you are losing money by buying them. There's no such thing as a free lunch. They are all rip-offs. Invest all the money you save by not buying them and you'll be many dollars ahead.
As a good example, I bought a state of the art big screen TV about 12 years ago. The extended warranty was $300. They gave me the run around about how one lamp was $350... blah, blah, blah. I told them to frick themselves. 12 years later the TV is still working like the day I bought it. I invested the $300 I saved, tripled the money, and can now buy a sweet TV with the $900 I have in the account.

He's saying he buys them from a third party company. You can save money that way.
I got mine from the dealership....mainly because they gave me 1.8% financing if I got an extended warranty(and only if I got it). So my payments are exactly the same as if I didn't get it and got financing with someone else.

At least on a Ford, you can get a Ford warranty online for a much better price that at the dealership. Online looking to make a little on each one where a F&I guy at the dealer is trying to make as much as he can on you.

or utilize the free market system and find the best warranty for your money, whether it be from the dealership or elsewhere.

Agree, if you have access to a credit union you can usually get pretty good deals through them. But if you want a factory backed warranty their are still options to get those other than at the dealership and save quite a bit of money in the process.

Tires because I get free rotations and plugs (or a discount on a new tire if they can't plug it), but that is about it

I've probably bought around 10 cars in my lifetime and have never bought an extended warranty. There isn't one single repair I've had done that would have been covered with an extended warranty. I've probably saved around $10,000 by not buying them.
A few friends have bought them and are always pissed when the repairs aren't covered or the company goes out of business.

Not often.
However, I just bought a warranty on a remanufactured tv from walmarks.
Only reason I went reman was my pops experience with the walmarks warranty. He bought a cheapo tablet for my nephew for his birthday. The six year old loved the gift but shattered the glass over a year later. Pops figured there was nothing to do but get a new one. He lost all his warranty info and it wasn't a defect, it was a six year old with a tablet.
Called walmarks and they said , no worries. Emailed him his warranty info. He gave that to my little brother who shipped the thing back and walmarks sent him cash.
Their deal works more like insurance than a warranty.
I just bought the new tv and the warranty. Figure I can't lose.
Oh and pops was totally forthcoming about the nature of the tablet damage.
