Moral and Legal Question Concerning Hitting a Dog

Say you were traveling down a highway near Ville Platte, you crest a hill, and see a dog on the side of the road. You slow down a bit to go by and the dog darts across the road and you clip it. The dog limps off and you turn around to go back and check on it as well as check out your damaged bumper. Dog owner was doing yard work in the front yard and you get his info.
Would it be wrong to suggest the dog owner pays for damages?
I've read in some places the dog owner can be held responsible and their homeowners insurance would cover it.
I'm hoping that is the case in Louisiana. If so I'll just send him a bill. I will hire an attorney if I have to and it makes financial sense.

You're an a-hole for even asking this question.

Damn, how much damage did he do to your car? And he's probably going to turn around and sue you for the vet bill.

How much damage could you hitting a dog, do to your car?

Animals are considered property, so yes, if it did indeed damage your car, they technically are responsible.

I'm assuming it would be considered an act of god if there is no leash law.
Yeah, you come off as an a-hole fwiw.

Dog owners responsibility to make sure the dog is either on a leash or on their own property. Besides being the right thing to do in terms of keeping others and their property safe, it's the right thing to do to keep the animal safe as well.
I hate shitty pet owners

The front bumper needs to be replaced. My vehicle is less than a year old and I'd like to keep it nice. It was a german shepard btw.

I think I was more concerned about the dog than the owner was. He didn't even check on it after. Just let it limp back to his house.

Why would he be an a-hole? If someone's animal caused thousands of dollars to your property, wouldn't you expect them to compensate you for the damage?

Your insurance doesn't pay for that?
Treat it just like you hit a deer.

I would call in the claim on my own insurance, shite happens.
I guess I'm just more laid back when it comes to things like this. I had a couple of people smack my old truck and put a dent in it. I wasn't that worried about it.

I know the owner is responsible for damage if it's livestock, would guess the same for dogs
