Last night, after drinking heavily for a birthday party, I got home and decided to heat up some food. I put it in a cast iron skillet and into the oven. Then I fell asleep.

Three hours later I wake to the entire apartment filled with smoke, a raging fire in oven, and a dog who was hiding in the bathtub.

So, I have two questions for the OT: 1) What is the best way to repair the cast iron skillet from the charred state it is in? 2) What is the best method for cleaning smoke damage on the ceiling above the stove?

Move out of your apartment and forget your deposit.

I always do soon as I give it to the landlord. I've never gotten a full deposit back.

You're not supposed to put metal in the science oven.

it's iron, it'll be fine. you can clean it by covering it with oven cleaner (wear gloves), and sealing it up in a bag for a few days. take it out of the bag (again wearing gloves), rinse off all the oven cleaner and other crap. rinse again with vinegar to neutralize the lye in the oven cleaner. wash with soap and hot water, dry thoroughly and reseason immediately.

ETA: what the frick is cask iron?

I recommend a smoke detector.

Probably going to have to repaint the spot on the ceiling. Make sure you get the right color.

Yep. Or at least try to feather it in.

We rarely paint ceilings when people move out, so he may be looking at a charge if they can tell he touched it up
