No, it's what the movie shows happening.

When that wasn't the point of the movie, which is why it didn't happen that way. It's about Dottie's CHOICE not her failure.

Self fulfilling prophecy. You see what you want to see and not what really happened.

What happened was, Kit moved on and Dottie went back to the farm. And Dottie was okay with that.

Eh. To each his own on this one. I just don't see it. It's all about Dottie's agency, and if she has non the story isn't any good. It doesn't make a lick of sense the other way. We've done this before, no need to do it again.

I just mean that it's funny that you see one perspective in a particular light ("feel good,") when I see the opposite in the same exact light.

why can't people believe that some people aren't invincible, and why is so hard to believe that kit perhaps earned it with that surprisingly gritty effort? her sister had a higher WANT.

dottie was going on with her life regardless, but she came back to win. she will still always be too competitive.. regardless how much she loved her sister.. she would still make her sister earn it. i see her smile as genuinely happy she earned it.. not as given to her. in the locker room she seemed kind of annoyed she dropped it, which of course could be just an act.. but idk..

someone said they had a link to the director admitting it.. i would love to see this.. bc i have researched it before and found nothing.

It was MEANT to be ambiguous and it makes sense EITHER way... SHEESH, why can't people see the beauty of that?

bullshite...

Starting with the fact that at the very end, when they're at the HoF, it looks like Kit has not seen Dottie in decades.

Because the movie has absolutely nothing to do with Kit. Kit is not a hero, she is a catalyst for change. Kit is not the one who is on a quest, who is battling, hanging, and making choices. The bookends demonstrate that. This is Dottie's story, not Kit's.

I hate agreeing with you. Dammit.

There are moments in film left to interpretation that solicit very strong responses from the viewer. Did Shane live or die? Did Dottie drop the ball on purpose? Does the top wobble? People have very strong opinions on the subject, and that's great. These movies will live on forever because of it.

As I said before, I believe she dropped it on purpose. The knowingly look Jimmy gives her as she walks off the field. But I really don't think interpreting it either way affects the quality of the movie any.

We should do another tread just on these types of scenes in film.

I PREFER to think that she dropped it on purpose... that she realized she had already won the most important thing she'd ever win... so what was the point of anything else except to humiliate her sister? THAT makes for a better story, but if you think the story is better the other way GREAT for you... it's a good story either way.

And also Dottie was flat out done with baseball.

She only came back to please her friends. She wanted to go back to being a housewife. She even said as much.

Anyone who has ever played catcher and been trucked knows that the ball won't be dropped if it's held in your hand. The body tenses up and grips harder. She wasn't trying to break her fall either. She let go.

Penny Marshall says it in the DVD commentary.

The web site that had the review with the direct quote, has faded into the ether.

How so?

"Take it easy on your little brother." from the beginning

She took it easy on Kit because Kit needed it more than she did.

The only people who get truly pissed at people saying she dropped it on purpose are younger siblings I guess...

Did not drop it on purpose, but being that she was a fierce competitor, Dottie could appreciate that her sister got the best of her. Hence the smiling after the play.

I believe that the original script probably left it intentionally ambiguous. But I think Penny Marshall filmed the movie with the idea that she dropped it on purpose because there is plenty of foreshadowing and contextual clues to lead you to that opinion.

She absolutely did not drop it on purpose. She got owned by her little sis....plain and simple.

eta: it would undermine the story and build up between them if she dropped it on purpose.

Disagree. Kit is not meant to know it was on purpose.

So she spends all movie trying to prove herself and get out of her sisters shadow, and when she finally does, it's a gift? Nah

She gets out of her shadow, but on Dottie's graces. She wouldn't even be in the league if not for Dottie.

Early on, Dottie competes with her whether it's races through the yard or on the playing field. When Kit rounds third and Dottie is shocked to see her coming, a light goes off. It's time to let Kit win the race.
