Benching Charles Brown
Posted by 1jw1 on 1/19/14 at 7:14 am111
Do you think SP benched him only for his performance??? Hahaha
Mickey whispered in his ear, if you can find ANY way to give him less market value next year we will be able to re-sign him as a top backup a lot cheaper than if you let him play out the rest of the season. It will also let us see if Armstead has the ability to be a starter next season so we can better plan our business in free agency and draft. Multiple benefits for benching Brown. Performance specific??? I think not.

I think so. Brown played horribly most of the year.

I agree with you on his performance. Not so good.I have never been a fan. But benching him allowed several things:
Reduced his market value. He can be a good backup for both LT and RT. Will re-sign him cheaper as a backup.
Test Armstead to see if he has what it takes to be a starter next year.
It is obvious we must upgrade the OL. This move gave them some insight on what to plan for in free agency and the draft besides sending out a message to the team.

You're looking too much into a player that was getting abused and was out of wake up calls.

This is actually a good first post.

1) He wasn't great at pass blocking (his supposed strength)
2) He was ineffective in the run game
3) He was one of the most penalized (if not THE most penalized) linemen in the league.
4) He has an injury history
I can guarantee you resigning him as a backup did not factor into his benching.

So are you related to Brown or or you his agent?
You don't let a guy stay in who was playing "bullfighter" with his guy and letting our QB damn near get his head ripped off all game long.
He sucked late in the year. Sucked bad. End of story.

Payton is an ubermaster of coachspeak. I was almost shocked at the presser when he announced the change. Don't ever remember hearing such disgust in his voice... "I had seen enough. Penalties, misses, etc. It was enough"

If we resign him I am right
If we don't I am wrong.
And no I have no association with him, I did not even like the pick when he was drafted and have been a non fan since. But I do think this had more to it than what is on the surface.I think he can be a good backup while we establish younger players from the draft behind Strief for 2015 which is why I think we will resign Strief to start and Brown as a backup for another year.

You think SP tanked this season to set up his line-up for next season, when we were in the playoffs run?
Think again.

They kept Jimmy Graham next to the tackle in anticipation of contract negotiations too.
This stuff kills me.

Perhaps I should have titled the post "Benefits" of benching Charles Brown....

I remember that one too. It's always a conspiracy!

can anyone look at Sean Payton and think in a game situation he might actually go "This is a good play in this situation but dang it, I gotta think about his contract situation coming up."
re: Benching Charles BrownPosted by 1jw1 on 1/19/14 at 12:36 pm to blueslover
obviously not at that specific moment in time it was the straw that finally broke.
As personnel decisions go there are few made sporadically but many times there is more to it than meets the eye.

Did you watch the same charles brown that all of us did? He flat out, no questions, no arguments - SUCKED.
You want him as a RT? Let's roll back a little bit to '11 vs. the rams.
fast forward to '13 vs. the rams
damn, he got his arse whooped by BOTH ends, on two separate occasions.

Trust that I have never liked Charles Brown from the get go. We salary cap painted ourself in the corner on the OL. Losing Nicks, Stinchcomb,Goodwin, and Bushrod since 09 and replacing them all with backups ( exception Grubbs ) and hoping these backups could keep the chains moving.
I think the overall picture is what made these 09 guys more valuable than they were actually worth individually. As a unit they gave Bree's just enough time to do what he does best. One of Bree's talents is his ability to see several receivers quickly where most NFL quarterbacks cannot see 4 or more receiver options in a second or less. I don't think Jahri is even worth what we pay him but they did not want to lose them all. I think Evans and Grubbs are starters and this year we were playing with backups in the rest of the OL positions. I think Armstead is a starter and work in progress now. We have to get a new center and RT asap and start them together early on. I think Armstead was given just enough time to develop before they put him in tho he did not have the best of games when he played but you cant expect him to under the circumstances. He also improved a lot from the first game to the second.
They were so worried about the defense coming into this season they focused hard on it and it was a much needed focus. Time to do the same on the other side of the ball. Major youth influx with lots of UDFA OL prospects. If we get a jam up center and RT I would keep Strief as backup and let Brown go. If they cant re-sign Strief with a new stud RT then I suspect they will re-sign Brown as a legitimate backup.
