The newest Criminal Minds episode mentions Bitcoin

Hookers in the show were collecting payment "using something called bitcoin".
Does this increase its legitimacy? Has bitcoin already surpassed the level of legitimacy gained from a cameo in a major show? Is this a net zero effect?
TV has more effect on people these days than real world.

there's probably one single prostitute who knows what bitcoin actually is. it's obvious the writers didn't care to actually research it and just heard that bitcoin can be used to buy drugs and the like so they figured, hey why not have a character buy sex with it. it's pathetic and sad.

Well they did touch on it being useful since it's not traceable, which is a benefit. The show was about hackers, so it wasn't as random as it sounds.
This is more about bitcoin being mentioned in mainstream media in general than how it is specifically mentioned.

mentioning it with prostitution and untraceable is kind of a net negative though when you group those together

Maybe. I bet someone who had never heard of it looked into it as a result of the show. At this point, I'd say any "press" is positive.

yea but CBS idiots made the Big Bang theory the most watched show on tv. I'd rather the press come from investors who are following Wells Fargo and the like.

FWIW, besides Criminal Minds, it's also been mentioned in The Blacklist, The Good Wife, and multiple times on Almost Human.
There's also another recent network drama that mentioned it but I can't remember the name.
