Well Jackson Square isn't downtown.
But: Sylvain.

I think Muriels does a great job, and is right there.

There are better places, but not too many.

Muriel's is on Jackson square, Sylvain's is across from it.

Depending on what you want (look at menus out front) you can't go wrong with either.

Muriel's Menu

I try and send people here all the time. Gus Martin is one of the most under rated chef's in NOLA>

Muriels is good, people seem to thing its a tourist trap because if the location but the food is good.

ETA; If you want Italian Cafe Giovanni isn't to far and its good too.

I get slammed every time I recommend Muriel's. The only meal there I didn't enjoy was the Easter brunch one year when they were packed and the selection was too limited. The regular brunch is so much better. I like the food, the atmosphere and the service. I think it's above average food. Now a wow restaurant, but a very good one with reasonable price options.

Any indication on what type of food or how formal/casual you want it? There are a bunch of places within short walking distance of Jackson Square that I would recommend, but I'm not sure of your budget or what you're looking for.

I was at Muriel's just only once I believe, and it was because I noticed they had foie gras on their menu as I was walking by, so I ducked in for some. I remember it being very good, but I'm not seeing it offered on their online menu now.

If you want fish, check out Fins, for something a bit more casual but still good, Emeril's NOLA is decent.

Never mind. I just peeked at the menu and know what I'm getting. Wagyu belly and veal shortbreads.

I'll be shocked if you don't love it. The space, the drinks, the food, the service...it's one of those post Katrina places that absolutely raised the bar on what NOLA restaurants should be.

Walking up through the alley is a great touch. We've eaten out back in the courtyard before and it was great. Gotta try a cocktail or two, they take that part seriously.

The shaved Brussels sprouts salad would pair nice with your selections.
