Do the Saints need a new offensive line coach?

to tagalong with the STs...
After the O-line play this year I think the question must at least be asked. Ingalls had been the RB coach the previous 4 yrs. dlP might be the biggest indictment. His play was clearly a step down from what it had been previously. Gruubs looked like he went backwards also in year 2 as a Saint.
Posted cuz I'd love to see this name...
CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports ex-Titans coach Mike Munchak will meet with the Steelers regarding their OL coach position.
Munchak lost out to Jim Caldwell for the Lions' head-coaching job and James Franklin for the Penn State opening, so now he will likely have to settle for an OL coach job. Munchak is regarded as one of the league's best line coaches and has also met with the Texans about their opening.

Should payton have already made these decisions if he was replacing certain guys?

Possibly, but we were hampered early in the year with injuries and underperforming personnel. I'm not saying that there wasn't a drop off from Kromer to whoever we have now, but the o-line as a unit played much better towards the end of the season. Certainly they played well enough to win the last game we played.

In the presser this week he said this and next week will be for full season grading and evaluation
It's my drumbeat for the offseason but it's an extremely wrong way in trends...
Brees sacks by year since '06- 18, 16, 13, 20, 25, 24, 26, 37
Reminds me of how we saw declining pass rush to the point where it was a glaring need. Then when fixed last year ya see the diff. The pressure on Brees is approaching the same urgency.

I think the suckage of the oline was indeed the fact we lost Kromer. You saw the huge difference in how they played last year when he was head coach and how much they improved when Vitt took over.
I would be disappointed if SP didnt hire a new oline coach.

More would be pleasantly surprised for me if he did.
So much of what goes on with coaches we really cannot see. I'm with the Can McMahon crowd but I have zero hope of that happening as long as he has been in place. That one would be even more shocking to the plus side (ala Gibbs-Williams-Spags-Ryan).

How about number of pressures? I think the pressure Drew felt all year is the biggest issue.

I don't think that has been a significant change- but look it up.
Sacks as a percentage of snaps just as bad of a trend-
starting in '06...
3.1, 2.4, 2.0, 3.7, 3.7, 3.5, 3.7, 5.4%

I think the drastic increase in sacks had as much to do with the lack of a second deep threat as it did the line. When a defense only has to worry about one guy stretching the field, it allows them to focus on defending the short and intermediate portions. That means the QB has to hold on to the ball longer as he waits for his receivers to get open, which in turn leads to more sacks. Couple that with an inadequate LT, and bad things happen.

grubbs, DLP, and strief shouldn't be starters on an NFL OL, I don't blame the OL coach

Is Strief at the Stinchcomb level of suck?
Posted on 1/17/14 at 1:03 pm to GoldenBoy
Apparently streif graded out as on of the top pass blocking OTs in the nfl

when you say stinchcomb suck, are you referring to his elder years in the league like a dick head or are you referring to the many years he was a quality starting right tackle for our franchise?

I don't know if the WR issue is the best explanation for the increase. Felt like to me that Drew was still getting the ball out quickly... when he got sacked, it happened FAST... at least that's how I remember it.

Yeah I don't get that either?
Blu I don't think any tears would be shed if he were to be let go.
Certainly a lot of factors are in the mix in sack totals and pressures:
How he interacts with the players on the line and how they respond to him.
What and how he is teaching the players.
The time he puts in reviewing the play of his guys and the upcoming opponent.
How well he works with Brees.
etc.
These are all factors only CSP knows and you hope he would pull the trigger IF he thought there was someone out there better to do the job.

Just looked at three memorable sacks from this season. The two against Seattle in December that resulted in fumbles and the Controversial Brooks sacks against the 49ers... in all three cases, Brees was looking far downfield but had less than three seconds to get rid of it. Not sure what WR would have solved that issue.
Maybe these aren't indicative of the season as a whole, but I bet they are.

How long before Munchak bolts for the next Head coach opening?
Posted on 1/17/14 at 5:14 pm to blueslover
I don't think so. We had a well below average journeymen at center, a low round pick at RT who isn't exactly a very athletic linemen but has been serviceable, and chaos at LT until Armstead stepped up and owned the position. We had our highly paid guard banged up for a good bit of the early going. I think we just need a personal upgrade at C and maybe RT or at least full health with our big guys. I think far too often posters on many boards on this site want to lay blame on coaches because it is a lot easier than admitting their team's personnel isn't as good as they'd like it to be.
