Tales of giant hogs don't carry weight

Not sure what I think about this, I do know that a lot of the time people overestimate the weight of hogs on the hoof...but to say a 200+ lb pig is "extremely rare" is a bit of a stretch. A buddy of mine killed this one down at the ranch this year and he went well over 300 lbs.

Turns out Texans - even those with considerable experience hunting or trapping or otherwise dealing with feral hogs - are not very good when it comes to estimating the weight of feral hogs. Truth is, they're horrible at it, with most wildly exaggerating the weight of the pigs, most doubling the actual weight of the animal.

But even adult boar feral hogs seldom weigh much more than 200 pounds and almost never get close to 300 pounds.

High fence hog, doesn't count.
I think 90% of people overestimate hog weights (like shot distance), but there are plenty over 200# and definitely some much heavier.

The 'hogzillas' are usually pen-raised hogs that escaped are were killed in a high fence place that tried to make them that large.

"People just seem to want to believe feral hogs are bigger than they really are," he said, noting the average weight of an adult feral hog in Texas is 118 pounds.
There are some big feral pigs out there, Henke said. But even adult boar feral hogs seldom weigh much more than 200 pounds and almost never get close to 300 pounds.
"The truth is, a 200-pound pig is huge," Henke said.
Key quote in bold. It always amazes me that people understand how big a 200 lb deer is but can't translate that to a 200lb hog.
If a pig isn't being fed a lot of corn (either via intentional feeding or by tearing up a lot of deer feeders), he isn't going to get to 300 lbs except in a very rare occasions.

We weigh cows often and when you sell them at a sale barn they put the weight on your check. So I get to see/guess quite a few times a year. And yes, it is very tough to judge something on the hoof that weighs over a hundred pounds or so...
Point of the story. It is tough and I do it often... someone who rarely weighs something that big is going to be even worse at it.

Between guiding other hunters when I lived in GA and those I've harvested myself I've seen a couple of hundred dead pigs. Of those only a handful got over 200lbs. My personal best is 220 and I doubt I'll ever break that mark.

Ive seen several between 250 and 300 on a scale and two that bottomed out a 300lb scale

I saw one by the low water bridge on Mahoney Rd. the other night that looked like a cow. Had to be 230+. And I have seen 300 pound hogs in SW Mississippi.

Without having put them on a scale, you don't know this

I think it is correct. I haven't seen any hogs killed off our place that went over 200. I have seen one that went over but it wasn't killed. I have a scale to weigh everything we shoot but sometimes we get lazy and don't weigh them. The last nilgai that was shot bottomed out my 550 pound scale with its head and neck still on the ground.
