Question for the OB mechanics...

I've got an old truck, 2000 gmc z71, that I havent really used much in the last couple of years other than at the hunting camp. Probably have put 1000 miles on it in two years I'd say.

Well I finally got a house and I have room for it so I'll be driving it again fairly regularly. What maintenance would yall recommend doing to get it back into shape? Obviously going to change the oil and coolant, transmission was flushed within the last 5 years so I think i'm good there. Going to grease all the grease zerks as well. Anything else yall recommend?

Also, there is a whining noise coming from under the hood, just noticed it the other day, when I'm messing with it ill rev the engine and see if the noise changes with it, thinking it may be water pump bearing going out... thoughts?

Sounds like you are on the right track... you can change the belt also..run a can of sea foam thru it as well...then maybe change the spark plugs..

The noise could be lots of things...probably is a bad bearing...idler pulley maybe??

Flush the brake fluid.

In lieu of a professional flush, suck most all the brake fluid out of the reservoir and replace with new, clean fluid. Don't do this on a rainy or damp day.

turn the wheel lock to lock, engine on, sitting still.

If the noise changes appreciably, it could be the PS pump.

Idler pulley would be my first guess, though. I don't recall water pump bearings making a lot of racket before they go out.

also change your air filter and make sure no rats have made nests or chewed up wires.

About as big a PITA as it is to change a water pump.

Water pump bearings go bad, they get slack on the nose, and then fail

Agree.

Can be worse depending on where its located.

OP, about how many miles on the truck?

im gettin there!

really though, the only big problem i've had was the rear end, replaced that at about 150k. have a "service 4wd" light that comes on, but my 4wd works fine so I'm not too worried about that right now

You might be able to scan and find out the code at Autozone. Not positive on that though since it isn't a Check Engine Light. Could just try pulling the fuse for the switch and checking that. MJ2 might be able to shed some light on that though

LINK

Eta: It randomly went into 4wd low last time I drove it, and got stuck there for about a mile. Shut it down and pressed all kinds of buttons, and it finally went back to 2wd. Might just be the switch
