on NetFlix. Not a bad movie. Pretty good for a relatively low budget sci fi flick. But wasn't this story basically stolen from the book 2010? In the book, a spaceship lands on Europa to mine the water for its ion engine. When they land, a creature attracted to the lights on the ship attacks it, then pulls it under the ice. Not a blatant rip off, but close enough.

I thought it was OK. Probably the most "realistic sci-fi" movie I have seen in a while. If that makes any sense.

Finally watched it last week and enjoyed it as well. Haven't heard of the book 2010 so I can't comment on the similarities

Got a kick out of seeing Neil Degrasse Tyson

I think that it is a great. It's a real science fiction work in the classical sense. The themes of adventure, discovery, and man's place in the universe are just what I like to get out of a true science fiction. Many times science fiction is made out to be simple horror/suspense. It was refreshing to see something like this.

I haven't read the book 2010. Who is that one by?

ETA: NVM. I think that I actually own that one, although I haven't felt compelled to read it. The themes of 2000 were a little different in scope than this movie though. A little more spiritual I guess. I can't make any conclusion, but I wouldn't call it a copy just because it involves the planet Europa and life being there.

Agreed. You either get the horror/suspense (which can be very enjoyable) or you get the action movie (which, again, can be enjoyable). This, like you said, was more about discovery and man's search for the ultimate question; "Are we alone?"

2001: A Space Oddessy is the movie by Stanley Kubrick. The book was written by Arthur C. Clarke at the same time the script was writting. Clarke wrote the sequel to 2001, 2010. In this book, another mission to Jupiter is set up, this one is comprised of Americans and Russians. The Cold War is still going strong, so there is some animosity there. The purpose of the mission is to find the monolith (megalith?) and find out what happend to Dave and his crew and to find out why HAL flipped out.

Its been a while since I read the book but, if I remember correctly, the American/Russian mission was trying to beat a Chinese mission to the monolith. The Chinese landed on Europe to mine water for their ion engines. A creature below the ice is attracted to the lights and attacks the Chinese ship. Like I said, not a blatant rip off, but close enough to have been the inspiration for Europa Report.
