How brand-dependent is shoe polish quality?

I need to polish some brown shoes but need to get some polish. I have always just bought whatever they had at a grocery/drug store. Are there brands that are higher quality?

ETA but I don't think you're gonna notice much difference by brand, except maybe if you got dollar tree brand. More about your technique.

All I have ever done is applied with a rag. I don't have much technique.

Kiwi is fine. Alden sells their "own" wax polish, but a clerk at their store in Carmel confirmed that it is just rebranded Kiwi stuff.
