The owner of Baton Rouge bars The Cove and Port Royal is planning to open a new bar called Hofbrauhaus Rouge in CitiPlace Court, according to a concept plan recently submitted to the Planning Commission. "This is to be a craft beer establishment specializing in an extensive line of craft beers, both domestic and imported," reads the concept plan. Numerous attempts to contact owner Tom Ange were unsuccessful, but Charlie Colvin at Beau Box Real Estate—who represents CitiPlace Court—confirms Ange has leased adjacent suites in the center for the new venture. The new bar will encompass about 5,570 square feet of space in the center, and will be located just three retail spaces away from The Cove. The concept plan says both of the recently leased suites—one of which formerly housed The Panhandler—will be renovated and converted into Hofbrauhaus Rouge. "The establishment will feature beer only, and will be a non-smoking establishment without liquor; and, not a restaurant," the concept plan specifies, adding the bar will be "similar in concept to those seen in Belgium and Bavaria." Colvin says that, as far as he knows, The Cove will remain in business as is. Port Royal, meanwhile, is set to be demolished and rebuilt this year in its current space adjoining the Waffle House at 2363 College Drive. —Rachel Alexander

My wife just emailed me that.
And like i told her. It would be nice, if they'd open up a specialty beer bar in another location. The only places to get a decent beer are within 100' of each other, and about 5 miles from my house, via a gauntlet of lights known as jefferson hwy.

Why does the cove, pelican house, and bulldog all have to be within 3 miles of each other. We need a decent place close to AP in BR. Why not a place off Highland

Three doors down from the cove, and the same owner? I guess corporate blvd is the official craft beer pub crawl of BR

To makes it easier for the BRPD to consolidate their DUI entrapment efforts?

I was thinking the opposite direction. It needs to be a little closer in town where it is easily accessed by bike.

They have a lot of places like that in Portland. They do really well, but only if they have great beer. Those types of places tend to keep their tap lines cleaner and their people are more knowledgeable about beer than in the average bar.
There's a place in Portland that has 50 taps. No food, no tv's, and no mixed drinks. They don't take credit cards, either. But when you have 50 fantastic taps, plus a lot of nice bottles for sale, you don't need any of that other stuff.
They may not serve food, but they will probably allow you to bring your own food in, since food keeps you from getting drunk as quickly. This is a bonus, in my opinion, as you're not stuck with crappy bar food. You just have to plan it out in advance, a little more. Maybe places close by will deliver to them, or a food truck will park outside regularly.

I'll take it, but I wish it was the full Bavarian restaurant version of Hofbrauhaus.
I love their wheat beer.

Food trucks would make a killing, I don't mind some bar food like at the Bulldog

Glad to have it in the neighborhood but it would be a stop in type of place. After 4 or 5 beers I lose my palate and need to move to spirits.

I stop in to places like that frequently to just have one or two on my way home. Any more than that, and I'm driving drunk, and I don't do that anymore...
