To avoid tanking in the NBA (and also would generate revenue for teams) would you be interested in all non playoff teams in their own tournament playing in a best of 3 format to determine the #1 pick. It gives everyone at least some taste of post season ball and can be good filler when the playoffs start getting gaps between games. It also cuts into a lot of phantom injuries at end of year that keeps stars out. And mostly we will never have a tank or not to tank argument again. Everyone wins

Wouldn't this theoretically put the 17th best team getting the #1 pick every year?

I don't think the players would be too excited about trying to get a player to take one of their jobs. Imagine a big time PG is projected to go #1 overall and the current PG knows that if they win the tournament, he's out of town.

I thought about this a while back, but it's unrealistic when you really get down to it. My idea was to seed non-playoff teams in reverse order by record, and have a single-elimination tournament but not in the traditional bracket sense.

Game 1: #14 @ #13
Game 2: Game 1 winner @ #12
Game 3: Game 2 winner @ #11
............
Game 13: Game 12 winner @ #1

Draft order goes in reverse order of elimination.

The problem with this, and with any tournament like this, is that you're asking players to compete in a tournament that will help their organizations replace them. It's ultimately a conflict of interest that I suspect the players' union would block and that the NBA wouldn't really jump at anyway.

They should do best out of three rock-paper-scissors.

Most fair way IMO.

I'd watch that.

I took the scenic route saying this, but yes, you're right. It's a conflict of interest. Basically an impossible but interesting idea.

I think the 17y seed would suffer a hangover effect much like bubble NCAA teams do in the not and would see the upset quite often

Here's a crazy half-baked idea. In each conference, seed every team 1-15 based on record (and the rule that if you win your division you're automatically in the top 4). The top 7 are in the regular playoff bracket, and the other 8 vie for the final spot.

Game 1, Saturday April 19: #15 @ #14
Game 2, Sunday April 20: Game 1 winner @ #13
Game 3, Monday April 21: Game 2 winner @#12
Game 4, Tuesday April 22: Game 3 winner @ #11
Game 5, Wednesday April 23: Game 4 winner @ #10
Game 6, Thursday April 24: Game 5 winner @ #9
Game 7, Friday April 25: Game 6 winner @ #8

Game 7 winner faces the #1 seed in the first round.

Now here's the catch. If you beat a team in this lottery playoff, you get 25% of their lottery balls. This means that if you're tanking, you still stand to lose some of your chance at a top pick. This also means that it's mathematically possible to go 0-82, win the NBA Finals, and have more than 60% of the lottery balls.

I can see that for the 17 seed sure.... but that still leaves 16 teams. Doubt 1 of the bottom 4 teams actually win. And lets say that 1 of the teams that barely misses the playoffs would be a team like with a lot of young talent, and they win the tourney. They get the opportunity to draft a stud, while the bad team would most likely be drafting after the lottery.

If you barely miss the playoffs, you are an average / good team. Especially if you barely miss the playoffs and youre conference is really good, like the West.

The draft is supposed to allow the bad teams the opportunity to get better by drafting 1 of the better prospects. Doing it by the tourney would allow an average / good team get the better prospect, and the bad teams stay bad by not being able to get bette players.

And i get what youre saying though about trying to prevent teams from tanking. But at the same time, the teams that are tanking are the teams that need the most help. And even when they try to win, they dont.

The bad teams would get worse, while the average / good teams get better. Doesnt make sense.

Love the idea but like others have said. Players wouldn't want to be replaced.

Also, wouldn't it just make the worst 2-3 teams perennial celler dwellers?

This doesn't solve the taking problem as well as people think. Why would I want to be the #8 seed in the playoffs if I could have the #1 pick in the draft instead?
