You keep that pick, sit back and probably land Derek Carr or that kid from Northern Illinois, and pay him a fraction of what you would pay Schaub. I don't...I don't...

Never mind. I misread what it said. I thought they were trading a late first round pick, but they're trading a late round pick.

Is this even possible?

Redskins sign C/G Mike McGlynn. Have a feeling DLP signs a one year deal with us on the cheap. Wouldn't stop us from drafting a C that we like since DLP can move to any interior position.

Yarp. Forgot to clarify in my last post that DLP had met with the Skins previously, so I'd imagine that they're no longer interested.

My only real problem with a one year deal is that it'll probably require a restructure, and I'm not so sure I wanna push money back for a one year deal at Center.

Restructure of DLP?

No, we would likely have to restructure or cut another player to free up some space for a one year DLP deal since we wouldn't be able to backload it. I don't think it would take much, though.

Ah.
If the market is this bad for him how much could he cost?
Its not looking good for him and a big payday.

re: Saints 2014 Offseason Thread

At least a mil +. We're at 2.4 at the moment, and I think we need around 1.5 to sign our draft class.

What I'm wondering is at one time I heard that the money to sign draftees was already figured into the cap, and then this year I've heard (at one point when we were tight against the cap) that we'd need to make room for them, so I'm not sure which it is.

re: Saints 2014 Offseason Thread

It's not already figured in. The whole confusion about draft picks I think arose from the top 51 rule. Starting around the third round, guys are barely making over the rookie minimum, so including a small signing bonus, they barely eat into the cap. 5th/6th/7th rounders may get no signing bonus or get something in the ~$20k range, so they pretty much don't affect the cap at all. They could even free up a little cap space for the team if their previously 51st highest paid player was counting as a 2nd year vet min against the cap (which is the case for ALL vets on one year minimum deals, regardless of experience).

Another bit of confusion is probably from draft picks not counting against the cap until they're actually signed, so you don't have to worry about them at the start of FA. Teams can just go up against the cap and then cut a fairly low cost vet to free up the space whenever they want to sign their picks.

Possibly. That would free up almost 3x as much as we would need for the picks on top of the $2.5m or whatever we already have. If they get a DT that they like a lot in the draft, I could see them letting Bunkley go and carrying over the space into next season.

I always just assume in order to keep the draft pick, he is bumping someone else making similar money so it works itself out.

Yeah, starting around the third round. Late second round picks will still be making under $1m/yr on an escalating contract.

We were reported at $3.1m after everything except the McCown signing. Assuming that was vet minimum, he only ate $150,000 into that so we'd still be right around $3m.

Thrillho covered pretty much everything else but I just wanted to put the current cap situation up there.

Assuming we get DLP for like $2m for 1 year, we'd only need to barely restructure a guy(the more years remaining the better) to sign draft picks(mostly our 1st and 2nd rounders as the rest will barely make a dent) and it'd put VERY little on future caps.

I think I'd still prefer Goodwin on a one year vet minimum if he would accept that. That way we wouldn't have to do any more adjusting.

I've been thinking more and more on this and, while it doesn't make fiscal sense, it is possible to carry Bunkley for one more year at his current cost.

I definitely think the smart move would be to draft someone at that spot, and guard and linebacker also, if they have a good BPA value. Those are 3 spot we need to get younger and cheaper.
